Robert C. Jackson's Candy-Filled Still Lifes

March 25, 2014

Robert C. Jackson is a contemporary still-life artist whose paintings are far from the traditional definition of a "still life." Populated by balloon animals, toy dinosaurs, cakes, candies, cookies and ice cream, these paintings are immeasurably fun--yet don't be fooled by the bright colors, there's more than just fun going on in these scenes. Jackson re-interprets visions and tropes from art history, placing childish symbols in context of an inherited artistic history. "The paintings we are about to examine are inescapable a bundle of contradictions, satirical complexities, and witty subterfuge," says Philip Eliasoph, Ph.D--"Essentially, Jackson is a uniquele self-realized painter."
