Bows and Beetles: Aubrey Learner

May 08, 2013

Aubrey Learner has put her talents of photorealism to whimsical use, arranging butterflies, snails, bows, candy and other insects into constellations and geometric compositions to generate these gorgeous double-images. Operating somewhere between scientific study and illustration, Learner has a fantastic eye for the beautiful and absurd, creating frilled dresses out of dessert foods and faces out of ants. These works are fascinating to look at up close. Learner's talent for capturing photorealistic qualities is undeniable, yet it is the fact that she arranges her objects in such strange fashion that gives her work a unique edge. Learner lives and works in San Francisco.
