Gwynned Vitello:<\/em> What did your childhood bedroom look like, and how did it morph into the teenage years?<\/strong>
Zana Bayne:<\/em> I’ve always liked surrounding myself with lots of things, and growing up, my bedrooms were always complete chaotic messes! I loved having all of my things out in plain sight at the same time, which can get quite messy. I do recall cutting out the brightest and most graphic advertisements and editorials from Elle Girl magazine, pasting them up on my walls like tiles. Later, when we moved to California, I was definitely feeling more in touch with my Goth side, my bedroom a sponge-painted dark purple, and I had this Victorian-looking bed frame with a Moroccan lamp hanging from the ceiling to top everything off.<\/p>\r\n

With your mom being in the fashion industry, did she influence you? Did she let you dress yourself for school?<\/strong>
My mom continues to be a massive influence on me, from her eye for design to her experience in business. I feel so lucky to have been raised in a creative family, allowing me to express myself through my clothing, no matter the phase. I grew up with a stay-at-home Dad who didn’t put restrictions on what I wore, sometimes resulting in peculiar combinations like wearing three skirts layered over each other, or my favorite gold felt crown which I wore every day to kindergarten.<\/p>\r\n

Were your fine arts studies helpful when you decided to go into fashion design?<\/strong>
Certain aspects of my education helped, and others hindered. In college, there was an attitude that fashion was not to be taken seriously, that it was frivolous and a lesser practice than the traditional fine arts, and more specifically, the antithesis of conceptual artwork. I think I struggled with this a bit at the time, but I don’t carry any of that attitude. What I have taken is a very graphic eye for shapes and forms, and an interest in how they interact with the body.

I imagine you put clothing items together in unexpected ways, but did you ever sew any of your own garments?<\/strong>
Absolutely! I love mixing and matching vintage with designer, and filling in the gaps with pieces that I made myself when I couldn’t find or afford certain things. When I moved from San Francisco to Berlin, I actually brought my sewing machine and bag of pyramid studs with me.<\/p>\r\n

Did you make belts at first and then literally branch into harnesses? What was the first material you used?<\/strong>
Before leather, I fashioned a rudimentary harness out of elastic and key chain rings. Later, when I gained access to the materials, my first proper harness was made from vegetable-tanned leather that fastened at the waist, as well as over the shoulders—still sold as the “Signature Harness.”<\/p>\r\n

How did you figure out how to make the design? Pattern, template, sketches?<\/strong>
The first piece was a series of small belts around the body. Being self taught, I convinced myself that I did not know how to make proper garment patterns, so I simply didn’t use them. When we started selling online, the pieces weren’t even traditionally sized, and each piece was made according to customers’ measurements. Obviously, this could only work for so long. Now, I come up with a sketch, then make a rough first sample. From there, my design assistant fine tunes the sample and draws out the technical pattern.<\/p>\r\n

Tell us about the qualities you look for in leather, and how you use different textures and weights for various designs.<\/strong>
Much of the collection maintains structured shapes, so the leather must have a measure of rigidity. The pieces in the “Originals Collection” were, and are, fashioned from heavy cowhide, which keeps a smooth exterior with a secure feeling of durability. The seasonal collections are made from double-faced bonded leather, so both sides are luxurious to the touch and allow a variety of textures and colors. We’ve been playing with different weights recently, as I’m interested in creating lightness and movement with certain styles that have hundreds of straps. Each piece must be comfortable, as well as visually striking, so we strive to balance design intricacy with leather and hardware.

Do you use other materials?<\/strong>
We introduced PVC in 2012 which, when clear, has a wild effect layered over clothing. Every season, we work with different textures like exotic skins or patent, so new materials are always a possibility.<\/p>\r\n

How long does it take to make a harness, and do you deploy the troops?<\/strong>
The “Signature Harness” might take twenty minutes, while one of the fully-linked dresses is at least six hours to assemble, not including prepping the straps. Currently, our studio is run by four permanent staffers, as well as a rotating cast of interns.<\/p>\r\n

Where do you source the metal accoutrement—even the tools you use—and have they become more complex?<\/strong>
Sources always vary, and many components have become signature to the designs. We also use traditional leatherworking hand tools, which are standard to the medium. Computers cannot replace them! We also work with jewelry designer Chris Haban to develop custom hardware, from star tips to Surrealist hands, to the curved, oversized buckles of the last collection.<\/p>\r\n

Tell us about the video collaboration with Lady Gaga.<\/strong>
This was pretty early in the brand’s development in 2011, when we were contacted by Nicola Formichetta’s team to design gold-embellished pieces for Lady Gaga’s dancers for Saturday Night Live. Shortly after, we were asked to make a series of full-body styles for her and her dancers for a tour through Asia, the pieces immortalized in the “You & I” video. I’d send a sketch, wait for approval and usually had less than a week to complete the project, but was given a great amount of creative liberty.<\/p>\r\n

What accompanies the creative routine in your studio?<\/strong>
I mostly design after hours so that I can be alone in the studio. Sometimes I’ll spend hours in silence, simply because I forgot to turn on music. I’ve found that adrenaline can work just as well as caffeine—without making my hands shake!<\/p>\r\n

We visited Jill Dumain, Director of Environmental Strategy, at Patagonia\u2019s Ventura, California headquarters to talk about the perpetual research and development that goes into sustaining a thoughtful and responsible international company. Remember, this isn\u2019t just another garment manufacturer: Patagonia represents the exploration of nature with respect for the environment and our footprint on it. They may not have all the answers, but they are leading the industry in demanding that these answers are, indeed, achievable. \u2014Evan Pricco<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Evan Pricco:<\/em> Can you give me an example of a product or process where research allowed you to immediately change the way Patagonia worked?<\/strong>
Jill Dumain:<\/em> Cotton was a fast one actually, because some farmers had started to grow organic cottons already. This was the early 1990s. We met farmers that were already doing some work with organic cottons in Texas, California and Europe right away; a couple years later we met farmers in Turkey, Israel and Egypt. You have to remember this was before the Internet, and you had to really crack the nut and solve the problem. That\u2019s what I always loved about it. Organic cotton came on pretty quickly because we were able to partner with new farmers, but it meant changing a lot of our supply chain, which is not insignificant.<\/p>\r\n

By 1992, we introduced our first organic product, which, to be honest, was not very good quality and didn\u2019t last long. We decided to take a different angle. Instead of just creating products that were enviro-products, we started to convert our regular products. It was like, ok, what if our supply chain was switched to organic, and we started making, for example, our pullovers in all organic? What would that look like? That became our strategy and implementation. By the 1996 selling season, we were doing 100% organic cotton lines. Next spring is our 20th anniversary of being 100% organic.

Was it a situation where Patagonia was always trying to think consciously but outgrew those means of production and had to rewrite the playbook? Like, \u201cWe are now $100M company, we need to refocus how we make things?\u201d<\/strong>
There\u2019s always been an element of that consciousness in the company, back to the climbing company that Patagonia grew out of, Chouinard Equipment. There was a climbing material that they realized was damaging to rock. Then they switched a big swath of their business very quickly to a different kind of climbing tool, which was not damaging the rocks in the same way. I use that as a legacy story because it really was one of the first times a company, although very small, took a significant part of their income to make that shift where they realized that they needed to be thinking about these sorts of impact issues. That was around 1972.

With all of the studies and research that Patagonia does, were there any garments or products that you could no longer make when you began to think about the environment and sustainability?<\/strong>
Yes, we initially lost about a third of our cotton products because we couldn\u2019t maintain the quality we wanted. But over the next few years, we were able to build it back up.

Were there things that you were able to introduce?<\/strong>
That\u2019s a great question because nobody ever thinks about that. What happened was it forced us to really get to know our supply chain. The typical way garment companies work, ourselves included, is you go from here to an agent that goes to a cutting and sewing factory that goes to a knitting mill that goes to a spinner that goes to a cotton broker that goes to cotton farmers. All of a sudden, when we really dug deep, we realized we had these very committed partners in our supply chain and had these development capabilities we never could have dreamt of. Blending yarns of polyester and cotton for our fishing shirts? Nobody would have done that for us, but because we developed these new relationships within the whole process, we were able to design and engineer a much better product than we could have if we had stayed in the normal conventional business pattern.<\/p>\r\n

Is there something new that you guys are working on that you\u2019re proud of that\u2019s down the pipeline?<\/strong>
Regenerative wool, which isn\u2019t really new, per se, but it\u2019s one of the coolest projects ever. I\u2019ve been doing this job now since the early 1990s, and when you\u2019re in these roles at Patagonia, everybody assumes you have all the answers, like you can predict the future of the environment. But I started interviewing some environmental experts, wanting to hear their perspectives on what we were doing amongst other things, and one of the questions I kept asking was, \u201cdo you think a company can be regenerative? Do you think they can actually make a place better by bringing their business there?\u201d And nobody gave me a positive response. They all kind of hemmed and hawed about it . . .

And that\u2019s just because of volume and impact?<\/strong>
Just day-to-day realities. At best, you\u2019re going to sustain something or restore it to what it was. But are you really going to regenerate it? Are you really going to make it better? I\u2019m really happy to say in the last five to six years that\u2019s really shifted, and for me, this wool project in the Patagonia region is working (Editor\u2019s note: Patagonia was the first company, in their namesake region, to buy wool from ranchers who mimic natural grazing patterns for wildlife). You go down there and you can see the shift in the grasslands, the farmers are starting to see their lands come back to life and it\u2019s reversing some of the desertification that\u2019s happened. I really truly didn\u2019t think I\u2019d see in my career that we would get to that point.

Doesn\u2019t this all go back to consumers, though?<\/strong>
The thing that I would love to get across is to never underestimate the immense power people have as consumers. And I truly believe consumption is at the root of the majority of our environmental issues: just the sheer quantity of stuff going through the supply chains puts unparalleled pressure on people who are trying to make it and unparalleled pressure on the earth to get that much moving around. We move more rock and sediment as humans than nature does annually now, and that\u2019s nuts. So consumers have a lot of power to say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to buy things unless a company is doing something better.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Who are the brands that you shop from? Write them letters, write them emails, make your voice heard, I don\u2019t think consumers actually realize how much companies do listen. And, hopefully, that is empowering because so many problems are so big, and you wonder what can you do? Responsible purchasing is one thing. Buy less, buy better, buy thoughtfully.<\/p>\r\n

Magnhild Kennedy AKA Damselfrau is a contemporary maskmaker whose intricate work lands her in discussions surrounding fetishism in fashion. Her maskmaking started small, when she was creating only for herself, friends and family, and this gradually expanded to become a larger art practice. All her materials are found and second-hand as she likes each of the elements to have its own story. When required, she embroiders and beads the pieces herself, working in a trance-like state to complete these tedious processes.<\/p>\r\n

Damselfrau was born in Norway and now lives in London.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tThe Quiet Life<\/a> is excited to announce the release of their newest collection, a collaboration with renowned Chicago\/Los Angeles-based musician, tattoo and illustration artist, John Herndon. This collection is based around 3 of John's iconic illustrations and include new hats (polo hats, 5 panels and snap backs), cut-and-sew pieces (an amazing workshirt and all-over embroidered crew neck\/jogger pant outfit), printables and a limited edition lapel pin.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tJohn Herndon was born in Long Island, NY in 1966 and eventually relocated to Western North Carolina with the communal living group the Grateful Union Family Trust, where he spent his childhood. Since the 1990’s, John’s primary work has been in music where he plays drum kit with several groups including but not limited to Tortoise, Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, and Starlicker. He is also an illustrator and tattoo artist currently working and showing between Los Angeles and Chicago. His illustrative medium is primarily india ink, water color and gouache on paper.

\r\n\tCan you give me a bit of history about YORK and what type of products did the brand provide back in 1946?<\/strong>
\r\n\tThe company's origins start in 1946, when our co-founders' Travis & Kyle York's grandfather, Henry Spaulding opened a footwear factory in Manchester, New Hampshire. Indian Head Shoe Company made custom footwear for professional athletes alongside their wholesale line for three decades before closing the factory. They prided themselves in offering up the first ever turf shoe. One of our favorite pieces from the archive is a high-top cleat made for football hall-of-fame quarter back, Johnny Unitas. He has an incredibly classic underdog story and we can't wait to pay some homage through our first product release.

\r\n\t\"\"<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tCan you give me a bit of a background of yourself, Mark, and Travis and what got you started with pursuing YORK?<\/strong>
\r\n\tI got my start in design working as an assistant for Belgian designer Veronique Branquinho back in 2001. She was just a few years out of school herself, and creating a strong cult following with her menswear-inspired wool pieces and innovative knitwear. It was that year that I really started to shape my own aesthetic, thinking about design in more subtle ways; bending the rules on classic silhouettes and finding new shapes within that. It led me to designing sport heritage collections for brands Jantzen Swimwear and Nike Sportswear once back in my hometown of Portland, OR. and eventually heading up the apparel design team for Reebok Classics in Boston. I was fortunate enough to come into each of those design roles at a time of transition, and given a lot of freedom to help mould the future direction of those collections. I think my love of heritage brands always landed me in the archives, searching for what made these brands unique and bringing that back to my team as a jumping off point.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tMeanwhile, Mark was getting his start in the industry through skateboarding. He and his closest friends jump started their car out of his parent's driveway in the suburbs of Boston to drive cross country to Mt Hood, Oregon to work at Vans High Cascade snowboard camp. From there he moved on to Brand Marketing for Savier Skateboarding, which was owned by Nike and the precursor to Nike SB. He also got his hands dirty in the film & video world as a freelancer for Adidas Skate, Norton Motorcycles, and SubPop Records. He moved back to Boston to help Puma build up their lifestyle category, most recently as the Head of Product for the Lifestyle Footwear category.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tMark and I were introduced by a mutual friend when we both lived in Portland and were just getting started in the sportswear industry. (I'll save our love story for another conversation, but it's a pretty good one.) Fast forward ten years or so and we were just getting our Product Design & Strategy studio, MCGARRY&sons off the ground when Mark reconnected with Travis York over some beers. Travis shared the story about his grandfather's footwear manufacturing business and we were kind of like, we need to do something with this.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tTravis has been a great mentor for us, he's an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. His brother Kyle, who is also a co-founder of the brand brings the financial savvy to the table which has really let us focus on our strengths of building brands & great product.

\r\n\t\"\"<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tIs there a general aesthetic direction for the brand that will tell the story of who you are and you are about? i.e. clean modern, vintage inspired, etc.<\/strong>
\r\n\tOur ethos is really about simplicity. We start with something familiar and a bit nostalgic and then pair it down to what is most essential. It's a must that everything is functional and comfortable. Our palette is clean and minimal and adapts to your life as it is. The design of our product really just supports our bigger brand mission to keep people on their own unique path. We aren't trying to change anyone. We aren't trying to make you stand out in the crowd. We hope that our products will become staples in our friends' lives. Just as they are loyal to their Vans or Chucks, their Levis & Hanes tees, YORK will become their go-to for athletic footwear.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tWhat elements of past products from YORK will you be utilizing with your designs for the brand?<\/strong>
\r\n\tIn looking through the archive, we were most drawn to the small personal touches that went into each product. Stamping the inside of the heels by hand to mark the size, or hand writing the style numbers on the box. There was a huge sense of pride in assuring quality for each product. We will be running pieces in small batches and personally marking each item once checked for quality in our own studio. Another important feature is the lack of overt branding. I think our people will be really appreciative of just having this blank canvas to wear on their feet. There is a lot of confidence in that.

\r\n\tHow will you incorporate all of your brand ambassadors and individuals into the fold of what being a YORK family member means?<\/strong>
\r\n\tPossibly my favorite part of this process has been totally unrelated to product or design. Building YORK has become this vehicle for collaborating with friends and meeting with people who we admire and who inspire us. The only prerequisite for being in the YORK family is that you're living by your own definition of purpose. We're not drawn just to gold medal winners and Instagram following. If you're doing cool shit, making a space for yourself even if it's not the easiest or most popular path, value your mental & physical health, being a good human; we're inspired by that and here to hopefully return the favor by spreading the word of all of these good humans through our digital journal OUT OF STEP.

\r\n\tWhat type of products can we look forward to seeing out of YORK?<\/strong>
\r\n\tWe've been playing a lot, proto-typing our ideas in-house has been a fundamental part of our creative process, and through it all we've learned that we really want to put footwear out there first. It's the foundation of the brand. We all love the simplicity and easy functionality of the older runners so our first footwear model is inspired by a classic 70s era running silhouette that we've built from the ground up, starting with a custom last. It's a neutral, light-weight style and we've stayed clear of the superfluous layers commonly found on performance runners out now. It's super comfortable with a IMEVA midsole, moulded footbed and breathable upper. Also in the mix is a mid-version of our runner, for a unique cross training silhouette that is perfect for the gym or court. We've also been working on some perennial accessories that we all felt we were missing from under our beds.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\tWhat does the future look like from a brand perspective and what are your biggest goals as to direction?<\/strong>
\r\n\tI feel like the sky is the limit with YORK. We are setting out from the onset with the vision that good content is just as important as good products. We are having a lot of mushy conversations about life & death & happiness & anxiety & how to be better people. This shared value seems to be surfacing more & more in the studio & in meeting new collaborators & it's almost like, yes of course we are going to make good looking and useful products that our community wants to rock, but we're really motivated to find stories that feed us and share those stories. I was just watching the new Vice x HBO special report 'Breaking the System, and got to thinking, how can we as individuals, a community, ultimately a brand that sells sneakers , have a positive footprint? So that's the big goal. Leaving a positive footprint.

\r\n\tWhat are some of your favorite brands, people, and artists right now who inspire you in your own work?<\/strong>
\r\n\tI'm still really inspired by the designers who I was exposed to early in my career. Meeting Raf Simons on the sample room floor at 20 years old and following his career all this time has been influential for me. I loved his collaboration with Sterling Ruby last year. How they spoke of the process working together is intriguing to me. The willingness to take something held so sacred as your 'brand' and say there is no you and me, there is just this new thing we are building together and we both have to love every bit of it for it to move forward in the process. Wait, shit. I guess that's like my partnership with Mark huh? In terms of newer brands who I think are doing good work, I love the menswear line OAMC and hoping they will follow in the footsteps of Public School and introduce a women's collection. These are the brands that are helping to evolve what American Sportswear means and it's influence on the streetwear world. Everyone is growing up. My two boys also inspire me everyday to be better at who I am. They're so purely creative and honest. It's easy to feed off of that energy.
