Last month, Juxtapoz had the fortunate opportunity to attended Wall therapy in Rochester, NY. We can’t help but smile when reminiscing over our experience there and all the wonderful people we met. Videographer and photographer, Rosanna Bach, was also in attendance documenting some of the artists and gathering their thoughts. Check out this new video she just released on Wall Therapy.

After we left Rochester, NY last week while covering Wall Therapy, Roa stuck around a little longer than anyone else and painted another piece of a bird with an egg. Created on an older building, the wildlife supporter adds yet another beautifully painted animal to the landscape.

During our time spent in Rochester, NY for Wall Therapy, the most notable aspect for us has been the genuine support, excitement and gratitude the local community has shown for this event. The city welcomes new public art with no political or bureaucratic stipulations. It’s that “Bring it on!” sort of vibe and it’s refreshing.

As the clouds generously give cover from the glaring sun here in Rochester, NY, many artists finalize their walls, while some ambitiously attempt to squeeze in another before they depart. We began the day by walking some old dead train tracks where we caught up with ROA who was painting a baby chick on the side of two abandoned siloes. From there we set off across town to photograph walls painted by a number of artists that includes Lady Pink, Smith, Wise Two, Bile, Range, Change, Pose2, Binho, Ever, Jessie, Katie and St. Monci. More reports from Wall Therapy tomorrow you ask? Yes indeed. Check back then!

On our second day in Rochester, NY for Wall Therapy, we got hold of a bike and hit the streets under the beaming summer sun (Making photographs extra difficult FYI). We made our rounds to some of the walls and in between witnessed a diverse city of culture and class, with plenty of waves of “Hello!” in between. We saw the immediate impact one of the pieces being painted by Baltimore-based artists, Jessie and Katey, had on the locals. There were friendly remarks of encouragement, inquisitive questions and friendly dialogue from passerbys. Since they began their mural, a group of young kids had been hovering around...

Juxtapoz has touched down in Rochester, NY for Wall Therapy and we are dashing around town trying to catch up with all the murals being created from over 30 artists. With our host and founder of the event, Dr. Ian Wilson, we made our first stop at the old abandoned train tunnels where we found two new highly patriotic pieces from the elusive artist Chris “Freedom” Pape, which is the rarest of treats considering we can’t even recall the last time we saw something new from him this decade (The famed Freedom Tunnels in New York were named after Freedom who created some of the first mural ever in there).
