Born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1976 and currently based in Berlin, Germany, painter Nguyen Xuan Huy borrows from various aspects of art history in his sprawling tableaux, employing a Pop Art aesthetic to visually confront the traumatic legacy of the Vietnam War, specifically the birth defects caused by Agent Orange and its deleterious effects even three generations later.

Vietnam's Fire-Breathing Dragon Bridge

Da Nang City in Vietnam just opened a new fire-breathing dragon bridge to six lanes of traffic and two sidewalks. The steel arch bridge weighs 1,000 tons and is the now the biggest in the world! Aside from being able to spew fire and water from it's mouth, the bridge is also outfitted with 15,000 LED lights that brilliantly change colors!  

Book Release: Jerry Hsu: The Killing Season

Last summer, Jerry Hsu's video series, The Killing Season, debuted on the web. The series captured Hsu's 3-week motorcycle trip through Vietnam that featured, amongst other things, a brush with death, a broken rib, and constant rain. The trip has now spawned the SPA-published, limited 150 run of The Killing Season book, featuring Hsu's documentary photography of his friends and the trip. The book is now available on SPA's site.

Last summer, El Mac, featured in our August 2009 issue, travelled to southeast Asia as part of the Viet Nam The World Tour. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, El Mac painted this beautiful mural that was captured on video and just now released.
