In this glorious interview, recorded on cassette tape in London in 1988, Chris Roberts interviews Tom Waits. Blank on Blank is one of our favorite PBS series and Tom Waits one of our favorite people, so naturally, we thouroughly enjoyed this.

Geoff McFetridge currently has an exhbition up through October 10, 2015 at Joshua Liner n NYC, and Dress Code made this fantastic documentary about the show and work. There are some great moments here; Geoff really getting to the point of the title, "It Looks Like it Says," how he likes to capture everyday life, his use of color, and the way even he and his wife look at the work. Great stuff.

Music Video: Deerhunter "Breaker" http://www.juxtapoz.com/music/music-video-deerhunter-breaker http://www.juxtapoz.com/music/music-video-deerhunter-breaker Music Video: Deerhunter
Remember a few weeks ago when we told you we were excited about the new Deerhunter album, Fading Frontier, out on 4AD on October 16, 2015? Well, we are still really excited about the Atlanta bands new LP, and now even more so because the track "Breaker" has a video, a video that is simple and nice, for a track that is a nice return to a more experimental pop sound that made us love the band in the first place.

KQED Art School is on a new mission to find out how artists develop their signature style, and they’re asking some prolific Bay Area artists to tackle this compelling question in order to figure out how one goes about developing a personal style that is recognizable and unique. The first artist in their new series is San Francisco’s Ben Venom, who creates punk quilts for everyday rockers who want to be cozy, as well as quilts that are a little less functional and sit more comfortably in a framed-art context.

The Creative Lives: Mark Whalen http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/the-creative-lives-mark-whalen http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/the-creative-lives-mark-whalen The Creative Lives: Mark Whalen
Inspired by human interactions Mark Whalen paints using both ancient and modern techniques. His intricate figures and hypnotizing use of patterns sing under a layer of resin that creates a slick window into strange parallel worlds. In his ambitious 2010 solo exhibition “Paralleled Opposites” at Merry Karnowsky Gallery, Mark designed a large cube to house an installation that featured an intricately stitched paper sculpture, as well as the sonic artistry of Carla Azar.

Taylor McKimens paints the mundane in a profound way. His scenes feature the characters and artifacts of his youth in Winterhaven, California. Finding inspiration in college Taylor slowly forged his own unique style, a messy, beautiful vision of everything around him. In this episode we follow Taylor as he takes us on a fishing expedition in Brooklyn, and installs a group show for the inaugural The Hole Gallery show in New York.

Jake Fried's New Hand-Drawn Animation: "Night Vision" http://www.juxtapoz.com/illustration/new-hand-drawn-animation-from-jake-fried http://www.juxtapoz.com/illustration/new-hand-drawn-animation-from-jake-fried Jake Fried's New Hand-Drawn Animation:
We’ve posted before on Jake Fried’s drawings and animations and are thrilled that he’s created a new animation. Fried created the animation using only ink and white out (though in the past he’s incorporated coffee, collage, and gouache). The piece, “Night Vision,” is a trippy journey through drawings lost and created. He employs a mix of abstract imagery and reflections of the natural landscape, the animation eventually blinking out into stars.

Short Film About Sculptor Beth Cavener http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/short-film-about-sculptor-beth-cavener http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/short-film-about-sculptor-beth-cavener Short Film About Sculptor Beth Cavener
The sculptures Beth Cavener creates focus on human psychology, stripped of context and rationalization, and articulated through animal and human forms. Cavener wants to pry at those uncomfortable, awkward edges between animal and human. Entangled in their own internal and external struggles, the figures express frustration for the human tendency towards cruelty and lack of understanding. Something conscious and knowing is captured in their gestures and expressions.
