Travis Louie is a New York painter who takes inspiration from Victorian portraits, mythical beings, and various oddities. Many of his sepia portraits are accompanied by stories of their sitters, for example: "Gordon six eyes lived in his parents' basement until his six eyes became highly fashionable and his anger at the outside world had subsided to a level of extreme indifference..." This past weekend we stopped by the 6th annual Sea No Evil benefit art exhibition. The Sea No Evil art benefit show at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium featuring artwork donated by over 100 artists from around the world including Gary Baseman, Tara McPherson, Tim Biskup, Shepard Fairey, Lola, Travis Louie, Hydro74, Amy Sol and many, many more. Tara McPherson and her Cotton Candy Machine space in Brooklyn will be opening a Holiday Giclee Show tonight, December 2nd, celebrating CCM's new venture into giclee printing. Paul Pope, Tara, Travis Louie, Jeremy Hush, and Esao Andrews will all have giclees on exhibit and available to purchase.

Travis Louie, a former Juxtapoz feature, will be opening a new body of work at Merry Karnowsky Gallery (alongside Chris Conn Askew) in Los Angeles. Curious Pets will feature some of Louie's larger works to date, but still with the odd, 19th Century science fiction look to them. If you haven't seen these works in person, they are quite impressive and really do appear as found photography.

Sea No Evil 2011 opened in Riverside, California at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium last night showcasing work from more than one hundred artists. Mainstays like Shepard Fairey, Gary Baseman, Lola, Travis Louie, Clayton Brothers, Jeff Soto and many more donated pieces specially produced for the show.

Seattle’s Roq la Rue Gallery has a delightful show coming up, featuring new goodness from Travis Louie and Femke Hiemstra. Louie’s signature portraits of monsters provide an innocent aura of humor, fear, and curiosity, while Hiemstra’s detailed paintings on panel and vintage books continue to lead us down memory lane.
