The May 2012 issue of Juxtapoz is our special examination on the state of Public Art in 2012. We have spent over a year discussing the topic of community sevice and Public Art programs with festival organizers, politicians in the US and abroad, and artists about their experiences developing Public Art initiatives and bodies of work, and how their experiences can be blueprints for other artists and cities to follow to better communities around the world. This issue is what we learned. Preview after the jump . . .

An older, ornate, beautiful Swoon wheatpaste from years ago was unexpectedly removed months back, and after much conversation and speaking with the building owner and Swoon, a new piece has been added to the neighborhood at the same location. We wrote earlier this year about Swoon's various projects in New Orleans, and Swoon and various collaborators debut the The Music Box on October 22nd to coincide with Prospect 2, New Orleans’ art biennale. The Music Box is an interactive installation of purpose-built shacks and miniature houses made out of New Orleans’ beautiful architectural details and plentiful salvaged materials; built into in each structure is an invented instrument created by a sound artist.
