This morning we take a look at the work of the Swiss-American Surrealist painter Kurt Seligmann. A native of Basel, Switzerland, Seligmann was known for his imagery of medieval troubadours and knights. While living in New York, the artist assembled a library of over a hundred volumes. Apart from being an artist, Pedro Friedeberg has also invented several styles of architecture, one new religion and two salads. He was born in Italy and now lives in Mexico where he works to criticize the absurdity of things through his paintings, sculpture, design, furniture and architectural fantasies. Pedro was featured in the December 2011 issue of Juxtapoz Magazine.

This morning, Montreal-based photographer, graphic designer, and silversmith Sofia Ajram welcomes us with a series of surreal dreamscapes. Sofia wants to share with you "the galaxies projected within and without: absolute space and absolute time."

French photographer Laurent Chehere is no stranger to the photo world. His dreamy and fantastical images have been used commercially by Audi and Adidas. However, Chehere recently decided to hang up his commercial top hat and focus solely on creating fine art. His most recent series, entitled Flying Houses, plays on our child like fantasies of flight and how we think about our everyday surroundings.

Presented by Baton Rouge Gallery center for contemporary art (BRGCCA), Surreal Salon 5 is aimed at once again engaging audiences in a multi-sensory art experience like no other in the region by shedding light on the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. This exhibition is currently on display at BRGCCA through January 31, 2013 featuring works from 43 artists representing 18 states.

Inspired by dreams, mental inspiration, and the loss of intimacy, the Italian born Marco Rea has been able to keep his works recognizable and original. Rea’s work rises from a glossy image, created in order to sell a product, full of messages of desire and fascination, which stir people to material fetishism for mass culture products.

This makes our stomachs feel a little queasy, but we truly appreciate the digusting, fascinating, and creepy chair with resin guts by Chinese artist, Cao Hui. We appreciate the chair and the artist's statement: "In order to deceive others, we explain with theory after theory, but it all ends in laughter and sometimes we even amuse ourselves before god laughs."

This isn't the first time we have shown his work, but we really love the anatomical self-dissection series by Massachusetts-based Danny Quirk. Look at the arm hair in these pieces, so well done. All this work is done with watercolors... 

In this series, artist Anton Marrast has created four illustrations based on the short stories of Gabriel García Márquez. Surreal and sensual, Marrast's vignettes capture the magic of Márquez's prose while also standing as digital artworks that are striking unto themselves. Marrast hails from Moscow, Russia.

YDK Morimoe is a Japan-based visual artist who combines photography, painting, and digital special effects to create stunning surrealist works. Armed with a vivid imagination and enigmatic personality, the mysterious Morimoe has been able to create images that look at the fragility of traumatized and abused youth.
