After the September 11 attacks, artist Sandow Birk was compelled to explore and understand Islam: What it is to be Muslim? And what does its sacred text, the Qur’an, represent? Then, Birk embarked on an ambitious and controversial 9-year project to create an illuminated version of the book. Now, Koplin Del Rio gallery proudly presents Sandow Birk: American Qur’an. On view September 13 – October 17, this will be the 7th and final show in the series.

The second coming of The Representational Art Conference (TRAC) will take place March 2-5, 2014 at the Crowne Point Plaza hotel in Ventura. The 4-day conference is packed with presentations, demos, and panel discussions given by an international cast of artists, curators, philosophers, and art writers. The brain child of Michael Pearce and Michael Lynn Adams, the conference was founded in 2012 responding to a need for more writing and organizational support for our growing contemporary figurative movement.

A great group show, featuring a slew of artists that have been in the magazine in recent months (Sandow Birk, Bill Dunlap) will be part of Fresh Paint at Lazarides' Rathbone space in London. Brett Amory and Frank Laws are just a few others in the show that celebrates a new wave of contemporary painters that have been catching the eye of the Lazarides' team. Go check it.

Sandow Birk, featured in our January 2013 issue, just completed two murals with his wife Elyse Pignolet for the new SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. In typical highly detailed style, Birk and Pignolet created the murals using hand-made, hand-painted ceramic tiles. Birk has a bunch of work in various exhibitions this year, but definitely worth checking out the new center and Birk and Pignolet's mural contributions.
