One of our nation's most widely recognized symbols is our American flag, aka "Stars and Stripes.” Saber has painted a fair amount of them and made a video containing the flag that caused a significant amount of controversy. We respect Saber’s intent with this particular body of work and feel they are more than appropriate for todays date. Happy 4th of July!

San Francisco was on the art beat this weekend with 3 different art fairs to attend, and Friday afternoon we made our way to artMRKT, the most internationally represented fair of the trio. A delayed mural ordinance is creating confusion and frustration amongst artists, and building owners in Los Angeles. A recent wall painted by Zes, Push, Chris Brand, and Evan Skrederstu was painted over to serve as a backdrop for a production company, while another wall painted by Sand, Vyal, and Cope2 was buffed out by orders of the LAPD saying it was illegal to have a mural or graffiti piece on their property.

The May 2012 issue of Juxtapoz is our special examination on the state of Public Art in 2012. We have spent over a year discussing the topic of community sevice and Public Art programs with festival organizers, politicians in the US and abroad, and artists about their experiences developing Public Art initiatives and bodies of work, and how their experiences can be blueprints for other artists and cities to follow to better communities around the world. This issue is what we learned. Preview after the jump . . .
