20 Minutes with Ron English

Juxtapoz // Thursday, April 09, 2009
Prolific artist Ron English recently stopped for a quick chat the day before the opening of his London show at Elms Lester Painting Rooms (check out the sneak preview below). Provocative and insightful, his work scythes to the heart of the matter as sharply as his execution of the paintings. Ron English Interview on Eve of Abraham Obama Film Release

Juxtapoz // Saturday, February 14, 2009
On the eve of the San Francisco premiere of Abraham Obama, the new documentary film from JetSet Graffiti, Jeremy Hatch pulled legendary street, studio, and ‘popaganda’ artist Ron English aside to speak with him about the origins of his now iconographic image of Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln fused together, forming one stunning (and slightly trippy) picture. Hear English’s thoughts on Obama, Shepard Fairey’s HOPE image and AP scandal, his experiences plastering his Abraham Obama all over the country, getting sued, and why he was reported as having been in a gun shop with David Choe at the DNC. Read it all in an interview by Jeremy Hatch with Ron English.

Ron English Welcomes Obama

Juxtapoz // Thursday, January 22, 2009
Ron English, the man behind the now iconic (although not quite as iconic as Shepard’s Obama Hope image) Abraham Obama image welcomed our new President to office in a unique (and eye-catching) manner: he and his crew of ad-busting minions took over a Clear Channel billboard in Los Angeles. So typical of Ron; always needing to be the biggest and best, huh? Well, we love it and suggest you sneak a glance if you’re in sunny SoCal, or peep his latest gallery work, which is now on display through January at FIFTY24SF Gallery. Ron English Interview From "The Run Up"

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, January 13, 2009
We just can’t get enough of good old Ron today. How could we? He’s friggin awesome. Luckily for us, Mister Ron English sat down for an interview with Walrus TV, where he talks about his strong views on censorship and commercialism and its relationship to public space. You can also hear from the man himself about getting sued, spending weekends in jail, his move from billboard to canvas, and how that has all shaped his incredible work. “I don’t mind going to jail for the weekend; I rather enjoy it,” English states in the interview. “It’s like a big bowl session and you start realizing that like, everybody in here is black and everybody is in here for selling fucking pot. You know, which shouldn’t even be a crime. I think it gives you another view of your society that a lot of people aren’t exposed to. They’re criminalizing a certain behavior just to keep down a certain class of people.” Preach on, brotha. Preach the fuck on.

Photos: Ron English's "Mythographic Vicissitudes" Opening at FIFTY24SF

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Ron English's newest solo show, Mythographic Vicissitudes, opened last Thursday at FIFTY24SF Gallery, alongside Alex Pardee's Letters from Digested Children. As the catalytic figure in the advancement of street art, English has been hijacking public and private space the world over simply for the sake of art, so it comes at no surprise that his newest canvas work proves once once again that English is a master of "fine pop art." For Mythographic Vicissitudes, English created a series of paintings based on variations on modern mythologies. Applying a sense of reverence to his patented mash of religion, history and art, English gives equal weight to all mythologies, from Jesus to Bigfoot to Expressionism. The effect is stunning and we highly recommend taking a look at English's new collection now on view at FIFTY24SF through January 29, 2009. In the meantime, take a look at photos of a few of our favorite pieces from the show here...
