With over 30 years in the graffiti game Roger Gastman and the folks over at 1xRun have teamed up with legendary LA graffiti artist Risk to put out a book containing hundreds of photos and stories. Recently graffiti veteran Risk chatted with PBS about the murals here's been working on. Using various colors of paint Risk is giving new life to abandoned structures and run down areas to give new life to the buildings without using any letters or characters.

MOCAtv’s new art channel has recently been documenting the work of many contemporary artists such as Retna and, JR, and now they center the focus on Los Angeles-based graffiti artist, Risk. With over 30 years of painting behind him, Risk feels compelled to brighten up areas that have been overlooked and uplift the spirits of others with his murals. He goes on to say “I want dispel the myth that all graffiti is negative.”

This classic Risk piece was painted at the legendary Venice Beach pit in 1989! This was a great place to skateboard, go to live music shows (sometimes raves), buy illegal substances, get jacked, and of course spraypaint on absolutely everything.

This past weekend we stopped by Known Gallery for “Hello Kitty, Hello Art” a one-day pop-up event. The gallery was filled with a new collection of Sanrio-inspired art featuring over 30 new paintings by graffiti artist POSE, custom chandeliers by Adam Wallacavage, a neon installation by RISK and new works by 64 Colors, AIKO, Caia Koopman, DABS MYLA, Kenton Parker, Niagara, Shepard Fairey and Simone Legno — all incorporating a rainbow of Sanrio characters.

Last week we attend the opening of “Gig” a group exhibition of gig posters based on the artists ideal fantasy gig for musicians through out the history of Warner Bros. Records. The exhibition was curated by Michael Coleman, Norman Wonderly, Frank Maddocks and Michael Nunez, featuring works by Aiko, Hydro74, Jesse LeDoux, Andy Mueller, Jermaine Rogers, Justin Van Noy, and countless others.

This past weekend we attended the private party and viewing of works by RISK at a beautiful private home in Los Angeles. “Old Habits Die Hard” consisted of large body of work, several paintings, Neon and large scale sculptures. Photos and more after the jump..
