I was saddened to learn the news this morning of the passing of free jazz pioneer and legend Ornette Coleman. He was in my opinion one of the single most important figures in the brave exploration of sound and new music. I first heard his beautiful music in high school as a young punk. And honestly, It changed me forever. It opened me up to hearing in a totally new way and has led to many other creative paths in art and music...

Their first show in the series, "New Normal One," focuses directly on Oakland. Oakland has been experiencing a major development within the community of arts for many reasons, one being the change of economics within the bay area. Oakland has been a very affordable city where there is a potential for growth. One area of growth has been very evident within the artist community. This show will be a reflection of that growth and it's relations that if forms.

While we were down in Austin during SXSW for Juxtapoz Projects, we were able to spend some time with our friends at Vans and check out what they had going on over at Vans Village, a pop-up store featuring exclusive merchandise and collaborations, competitive BMX Ramp and daily Open Mic sessions. We were most excited to learn that Vans brought out our mutual friends and artists Jay Howell, Rich Jacobs, Zio Ziegler, and Smithe to paint shipping containers and the actual store itself! Vans' Supply and Demand Show, a House of Vans group show featuring works by Chris Yormick, Rich Jacobs, Russ Pope and Jay Howell, opened last Saturday, September 10, to a great crowd of fans who ventured out to the 20,000 square feet warehouse to see the unique show and art installation.
