Not too long ago, the absurd news story about an uncommissioned fresco restoration gone wrong at  the church of Santuario de Misericordia in Spain went viral.The tragic yet hilarious refurbished image of Christ was more than enough to produce a laugh, and shortly after the incident, the church has become somewhat of a tourist destination as the magnificently horrific painting has attracted many onlookers.

In a recent and somewhat tragic incident, the church of Santuario de Misericordia's fresco depicting good ol' JC was radically revamped, or at least that was the initial goal of the eighty-something-year-old amateur restorer who took the project on without asking permission. A quote from culture councilor Juan Maria de Ojeda describes the fate of the 19th century wall painting aptly remarking she noticed "she had gotten out of hand" and gone on to confess to local authorities.

The Rosenbach Museum and Library was given a nice gift, and an assignment: Take Maurice Sendak's Chertoff mural, once housed in Lionel and Roslyn Chertoff's Upper West Side apartment, and perform a unique conservation and preservation task on what most believe to be the only Sendak mural in existence.
