I ART JOBURG: PART 2

Often when traveling to unknown lands, in this case Johannesburg, one can create certain expectations in their head and discover the exact opposite. After a few days running around, are initial skepticism of Joburg has been revoked and anything but negative. Aside from countless memorable adventures from our hospitable hosts and curators of the event, /ANDPEOPLE, we have witnessed two massive murals by ESPO and ROA come to completion.

May 2012 cover artist, Steve "ESPO" Powers (and December 2007 for that matter, as well as in Johannesburg with Jux at the moment) just had his film, A Love Letter For You, released on iTunes. Directed by Juxtapoz contributing editor, Joey Garfield, the film is a narrative based around Powers as he returns to his hometown of Philadelphia to paint on 50 rooftops along the market train line.

Brisbane-based street artist, Fintan Magee, recently completed a series of murals in Jakarta, Indonesia while he was doing a residency at ISAD studios.

Chicago-based creative collective, Pawn Works, has an ongoing project entitled “Art in Public Places” that has included many renowned artists, with Overunder and Labrona being the most recent to participate.  Many of the previous works, including this mural, reference the history of Pilsen, the neighborhood where the murals have been painted. This particular piece displays an eclectic selection of imagery spanning a lengthy old wall.

This year, yours truly (aka Editor Evan Pricco) will be doing a little talking about street art and internet with fellow art editors Tristan Manco and RJ Rushmore of Vandalog, and we get to introduce Ron English at the screening of his Popaganda film. After a sleepless 15 hour flight, we anxiously arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa for the I ART JOBURG project presented by adidas Originals and curated by /ANDPEOPLE. This month long project has brought five international and local artists to create large-scale public murals in the bustling streets surrounding the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg’s central art district.

Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado, an artist representing Southern California was named as one of 10 finalists in the national Jose Cuervo Tradicional Mural Project 2012 and will compete for a $15,000 grant. The announcement was made last week at a ceremony in Los Angeles, which Juxtapoz attended...
