Zofia Bogusz was born in Poland in the '80s. She lives and works in New York City, where she received a degree from the School of Visual Arts. Creating erotic female portraits, Catherine Abel places her figures into stylized scenes inspired by large artistic movements. Working to combine the angular shapes of 20th century painting with modern female sexuality, Abel's portraits (whose faces almost resemble demure versions of Christian Schad's) re-insert women into the history of Modern painting.

Apparently, all you need are 5 different colors of pushpins, and you can make these incredible portraits by Eric Daigh. Even though at times we think we are looking at mugshots (what, no smiles?), Daigh is at the top of his game with these new series of pushpin portraits. 

Sarah Ann Loreth does not take photographs; she creates them from scenes she pulls from deep within her psyche. Sarah is a fine art photographer from New Hampshire, who specializes in self-portraiture and conceptual portraiture. In her work she tries to covey a quiet stillness of emotion with a connection to her natural surroundings.

We have shown some of Mark Powell's work on the site before, but we just caught a new batch of Powell's envelope portraits, using a Bic Biro pen on vintage, yellow aged envelopes. The envelopes all come from older European mail networks.

Southern California based, German-born Andrew Myers takes hundreds of screws, nails them to a wood panel, and then paints over each screw top to get these interesting, three-dimensional appearing portraits. He takes telephone books pages from the subject's home area and pastes them as the background.

A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, we are enjoying these deconstructed portraits from Colin Chillag. At some points complete, and at times appearing to be in process, Chillag constructs these pieces like passing memories, where certain details remain but others fleeting.

This is an interesting project by Chinese creative agency, Senseteam, where they "cut apart and recompose the currencies of countries  from around the world in an examination of identity and cultural desires that links together wealth, branding, and human expressions and ethnicities." The results are very unique.

As part of Dutch Book Week, the Van Wantern Etcetera ad agency created this series of "writtten portraits," where pages of autobiographical books are carved in the shape of the author’s face. The artist Souverein is the one who is getting credit for the work. Great job.

When we were looking back at some of our more popular posts from 2011, we came across a post we did on Sergio Lopoez' Painted Roses series at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco this past May. The work featured nudes, floral tattoo work, all in oil and gouache works on paper, linen, and canvas.
