This weekend in NYC, Ricky Powell (and Craig Wetherby) will have his iconic street photos remixed and reworked by Ryan Keeley at an exhibition with ArtNowNy, Frank's Chop Shop, and the Good Life. Of course, Ricky is featured often in our Beastie Boys issue on newsstands now, and we wanted to take this time not only to honor Ricky's classic photography but get the word out on his new show. So, let's get a look... 

Juxtapoz will be headed to NYC this week for all the festivities around Frieze and the surrounding art fairs. But one thing we will definitely be checking out is Jane Alexander, cover artist of our Contemporary African Art survey in November 2008, and her installation work with Museum for African Art that is residing at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine on Amsterdam Avenue.

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Season 1 Episode 0, an exhibition of new paintings by the British artist Ian Francis. This is Francis’ second solo show with the gallery. Working in mixed media on canvas and acrylic panels, Ian Francis combines abstraction, figuration, and elements of both painting and drawing. For this exhibition, the artist is unveiling over a dozen medium- to large-scale works on canvas and ten smaller works on acrylic that reflect broadly on the experience of television entertainment. Two former Juxtapoz featured artists, Saber and Rostarr, will be opening a new show at Opera Gallery in NYC this coming Thursday, April 19. We don't have much information at this time, but what we do know is that with the passion and energy of Saber's canvases mixed with the technical abstrations by Rostarr, this one should be good.

Opening last night,Jonathan LeVine Gallery opened Thursday’s Girl, a series of new works on canvas by Southern California-based artist Josh Agle (Shag), in what is his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. The former Juxtapoz cover artist will have his show open through May 4, 2013. The show was inspired by the Velve Underground and the landmark song, "All Tomorrow's Parties."

We are in NYC right now for the opening of Kenny Scharf's Kolors at Paul Kasmin Gallery, tonight April 4. (We haven't mentioned this yet, but Kenny's the cover artist for the new May 2013 issue). He wil unveil a new body of work plus a series of sculpture works.

Just opened this past Friday at Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York is a solo show of paintings by Joshua Marsh entitled As If. The paintings vibrate with glowing hues and simplified still life shapes, functioning both as representational images and distinctly formal fields of color. "Strong color and the play of light dominate Marsh’s paintings, slowly revealing simple objects. Color functions as form, while objects and their surroundings border on dissolution."

It's no doubt that the Rockaways in New York faced some extreme damage during Hurricane Sandy, and right beside the site where the boardwalk once stood, MoMA PS1 has constructed and rebuilt a large geodesic dome as a space to percolate thought, host events, and create an exciting exchange of various kinds. We are eager to see what results. It will be officially opening this Friday, March 29, 2013.

Next week 30 multicolored life-size horses and 60 dancers will take over Grand Central Terminal. Orchestrated by artist Nick Cave, the horses will graze for a while and then perform a choreographed piece to harp music. Watch a video after the jump!

Joshua Liner Gallery has moved spots in NYC to a street-level, 2,600-square-foot exhibition space located at 540 West 28th Street in the Chelsea Arts District. To kick off the opening of the new space, the gallery will open a group show, Direct Address, this Thursday March 21 with a great roster of former Juxtapoz cover artists and features, as well as some new talent that we look forward to checking out. Swoon, Steve "ESPO" Powers, David Ellis, Evan Hecox, and Jean-Pierre Roy are just a few names in the show....
