New York artist Michael Mapes is a collector. Well, maybe not your typical one. His art is inspired by scientific specimen collections. His photographs themselves question the logic behind the organization of each piece. By dissecting and then compartmentalizing individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, and on insect pins, he has created a "biographical DNA"...

If you're a fan of incredibly intricate and precisely composed black and white tattoos, then prepare to be mesmerized by the work of NYC-based Thomas Hooper. Born in Hastings East Sussex, Hooper studied drawing at The London Institute of Art & Design, later relocating to New York to pursue his career as a tattooist and artist. His career continues to skyrocket at Saved Tattoo in Brooklyn where he is recognized for his unique style and impeccable technique.

As we have noted on the site a few weeks back, NYC standard and graffiti legend FUTURA opened a new show, Future Shock, his first in his native city in over 12 years. Curated by Nemo Librizzi and located at 560 Washington Street, Ivory Serra went to the opening for Juxtapoz to see the huge crowds and FUTURA himself.

We had the pleasure to be visit the opening of the most recent exhibition of Stephen Powers, aka ESPO, at the Joshua Line Gallery in NYC. A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures is a wonderful translation of Powers' love of sign-painting, images, and colors. The pieces are made of enamel on aluminum with type, graphics and bright pigments, where Powers constructs a unique personal language that speaks to all.

This past week, we made it out to the opening of May 2011 cover artist, Eric Yahnker's new solo show, Virgin Birth N' Turf, at the Hole in NYC. The exhibition featured meticulous, two-foot colored pencil and graphite drawings to towering ten-foot works on paper; from tiny sculptural interventions to massive three dimensional arrangements.

New York Art Department "PROHIBITION: NEW YORK CITY"

On September 13, 2012, Mayor Bloomberg's proposed New York City soda ban goes to vote. In response, Mountain Dew and New York Art Department have launched a creative local outdoor campaign tilted PROHIBITION: NEW YORK CITY. The posters feature an imaginary 17oz can (the ban would limited sales to containers 16oz and smaller) and utilize Mountain Dew's iconic "wave" logo of the 1970s and 1980s.
