Kurt Vile x ESPO: Making of "Waking On a Pretty Daze" Album Cover

Music // Friday, February 15, 2013
We previously reported that for Kurt Vile’s newest album he enlisted the expertise of fellow Philadelphian sign painter/wordsmith artist, Steve Powers aka ESPO. The album titled “Waking On a Pretty Daze” will incorporate Powers artwork on the cover and in the packaging from a mural he painted in Philly. A short documentary was created on the making of this mural. It includes some of the ideas behind the visual imagery and vocabulary Powers chose to use and incorporate on the wall.

Mark Ryden for Tyler, The Creator Album Cover

Music // Friday, February 15, 2013
An unlikely, but in our eyes, perfect match for an album cover. Mark Ryden, the multiple Juxtapoz cover artist and one of the most respected names in contemporary art, teamed up with, yes, Odd Future frontman Tyler the Creator for the cover artwork for his upcoming Wolf album. The album, out April 2nd, features a few different cover treatments, but the Ryden one is by far our favorite...

Short Film: Beach House "Forever Still"

Music // Wednesday, February 06, 2013
We love how simple the explanation for this short film is: Beach House perform outside in their atmospheric short film. The band made it a tad more clearer: We performed/recorded four songs from Bloom outdoors, in various locations that are special for us around El Paso and Tornillo, Texas. The film follows the passing of one night, starting at sunset and ending at dawn. Go, watch, now.

The Works of Justin Hopkins, aka RareBit

Music // Friday, February 01, 2013
A great collection of drawings from Los Angeles based Justin Hopkins, who also goes by the name RareBit. As RareBit, Hopkins releases music via Non Projects, and his illustration work is full of fine details and pointillism style. Growing up in Washington, Hopkins says of his work: I like to think of my music as fungus encrusted and in a constant state of growth and decay. In this way I am influenced by the organic, wet, and florally lush environment in which I grew up.

Sandow Birk & Elyse Pignolet Murals for SFJAZZ Mural

Juxtapoz // Thursday, January 31, 2013
Sandow Birk, featured in our January 2013 issue, just completed two murals with his wife Elyse Pignolet for the new SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. In typical highly detailed style, Birk and Pignolet created the murals using hand-made, hand-painted ceramic tiles. Birk has a bunch of work in various exhibitions this year, but definitely worth checking out the new center and Birk and Pignolet's mural contributions.

Music Video: Animal Collective "Applesauce"

Music // Wednesday, January 30, 2013
The video is intended to be viewed in complete darkness from maximum effect. That is what the video description warns you. So maybe you have to wait to watch this in your closet later today, because we did the full total darkness thing, and we have both a headache and sense of happiness. Animal Collective's Applesauce was directed by Gaspar Noé and features model Lindsey Wixson with elements from Paul Sharits' 1968 short film N:O:T:H:I:N:G thrown in there. Enjoy after the jump...
