For mixed-media artist Monica Canilao’s latest curated exhibition Alchemy, she called on dozens of her closest friends from all over the country, bringing a massive install to Detroit’s Inner State gallery, complete with a gallery wide takeover. In connection with the show, 1xRUN’s Editor-In-Chief Pietro Truba caught up with Canilao to discuss her recent work, curating Alchemy and more.

This one should be awesome. Our good friend Monica Canilao, who we have worked with in Detroit in the past (see the Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary project from 2009-10), and we are hyped that she curated a group show, Alchemy, at Inner State Gallery. She brought some really good artists to show: Swoon, Doze Green, Swampy, Dennis McNett, Kyle Ranson, and a lot more. Basically the type of artists you should know/get to know.

We have been lucky over the past 5-6 years to have worked with Oakland, California based fine artist, collagist, painter, mixed-medist, sculpturist, installation artist, you name it, but we have been lucky to watch Monica Canilao become a force in contemporary art. Of all the projects she creates, "Born To Ruins," which opened at Subliminal Projects this past weekend, is another chapter in what will continue to be an fantastic career for Canilao.

We have worked on numerous projects with Oakland, California-based fine artist Monica Canilao over the years, and one thing we always know when we check in with her is that she is going to be busy on numerous projects. From Detroit, to Miami, to New Orleans, and back to Northern California, Canilao's art and life have fused together in one creative hybrid. We went to Monica's studio to see what she was preparing for her next exhibition at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles, opening June 7, 2014.

Opening tonight in Long Island City at the Headscapes Warehouse is an artist-organized warehouse show that goes through the April 27, 2014. "RESONANCE" is based around Carl Jung's philosophy on dreams, where a dozen artists dig into archetypes and magic, and, like Jung, apply it to the everyday, to the home. In this collaborative, artist-run group show, the most common objects have deeper meanings, darker pasts, and, most importantly, shared meanings.
