Matthew Barney (featured on the cover of a limited edition Juxtapoz in 2008) recently debuted his first major solo exhibition, River of Fundament, in Los Angeles at the Museum of Contemporary Art. River of Fundament is one of Barney's most challenging and ambitious projects to date, and his largest filmic undertaking since the renowned, five-part Cremaster film cycle.

The LA Art Book Fair, presented by the good people of Printed Matter, is one of our favorite art events of the year and a chance for us to check the best in independent publishing, whether it be vintage books, new books, zines, collectibles, and other periodicals. Juxtapoz again will have a booth this year, and along with new mags, old mags, and books, we will release two new zines under the Juxtapoz Editions imprint: Sage Vaughn "Vanitas" and Kristin Farr "Magic Hecksagons."

Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of our time, Mike Kelley (1954-2012) produced a body of deeply innovative work mining American popular culture and both modernist and alternative traditions - which he set in relation to relentless self and social examinations, both dark and delirious. His traveling retrospective, "Mike Kelley," opens at MOCA's Geffen Contemporary on March 31, 2014, and will be on display through July 28, 2014.

We have been covering REVOK in Juxtapoz for years, both in print and online, and have loved seeing the evolution of his work as the longtime Los Angeles-based artist moved to Detroit a few years back. The result has been a fascinating and growing collection of 3D collages of found materials. Revok's new book, "Made In Detroit," will be celebrating at MOCA on January 4, 2014 with a book signing event.

Back in 2011, in conjunction with September 2013 cover artist Geoff McFetridge's mini skate park installation for MOCA's Art In the Streets exhibition, the Los Angeles-based artist created 24 unique pairs of Nike SB Dunks, with each shoe being made from an original paper painting. The sneakers were then auctioned off to benefit the MOCA Foundation. In honor of the project, we take a look back at some of the great drawings that made their way into the series...

When Jeffrey Deitch decided to close his namesake Deitch Projects gallery in NYC in 2010 to take over as the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, there were grumblings, mixed with general excitement, and perhaps some sort of anticipation that a blueprint would be established for struggling institutions in the coming years. The idea seemed innocent enoug: hire a high-powered, independent galleriest/curator to help create a program and direction for museum's to exist in an increasingly difficult era for major museums to hold the public's interest, and money, for more than one show a year. Well, this experiment may officially be over, as the LA Times is reporting Deitch will be leaving the MOCA for NYC ...

We're on a bug art kick even though we didn't know that was a thing until this morning. The second piece of bug art we are enjoying this morning is John Knuth's collaboration with MOCAtv using 250,000 house flies! He uses the digestive process of the fly to paint a canvas with the pigmented organic waste of the flies. Watch the video after the jump!

We stopped by the opening reception for Chris Johanson’s latest exhibition “Within The River of Time Is My Mind” currently on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center. Organized by guest curator Andrew Berardini, the exhibition features new paintings, sculpture, and found wood site-specific installation. Known for his figurative work that features text, the exhibition will highlight the kaleidoscopic color and angles that Johanson employs. Photos and more after the jump . . .
