If you have been to Outside Lands the last 3 years, you know that Mike Shine's "Dr Flotsam" stage and performance art portion is a major highlight of the festival. Juxtapoz and the Shine crew are back at it in 2014, and we have some previews of the bands that are going to be playing at the Dr. Flotsam’s Hell Brew Revue Stage all weekend long. Let's listen in.

We are very excited to announce our participation and curation at the 2014 Outside Lands Music & Art Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, August 8—10, 2014. This year, we have brought back the great Mike Shine and the Dr. Flotsam's Hell Brew Revue stage, full of performance art, a great iist of bands, and full carnival set-up in the woods. So in-between sets by Kanye West, Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, Tegan & Sara, and hundreds more, we will have live-painting, art adorning the stages, and installations throughout the park to experience.

Our good friend and March 2013 cover artist Mike Shine has been busy in Northern California over the past year, culminating in a full-on performance and exhibition of the Hell Brewers at Art Works in San Rafael, California this past March. Shine passed along a few images to us last week, and because he and the Hell Brewers will be performing and curating a special artzone at Outside Lands 2014 this August with Juxtapoz in San Francisco, we are getting ourselves in the mood today.

This Saturday, March 15, our friends at White Walls/ShootingGallery will be opening and celebrating "An Even Eleven," a group show that honors 11 years of the Shooting Gallery. The show will be a mix of classics and up-and-coming talents, a great way to showcase how much the Shooting Gallery has made the Tenderloin an epicenter of contemporary art for years. Take a look at the line-up...

As you may have seen over the past few years, Juxtapoz has teamed up with Converse and a collection of artists in specific cities to create a special Wall to Wall project that appears on the back of our printed magazine each month. Today, we look at the incredible Mike Shine mural created in San Francisco that is featured on the back cover of the October 2013 (Tom Waits) issue.

Juxtapoz was again, for the third year, at the annual Outside Lands Music and Art Festival held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, where we curated the art portion of the event. Mike Shine, Dennis McNett, and Camille Rose Garcia all created fantastic site-specific installations! Some of the weekend's acts stopped by to say hi and we met up with Jurrasic 5, Foals, Surfer Blood, Cherub, Atlas Genius, Milo Greene, The Head and the Heart, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Dillon Francis, and more to talk album artwork, music videos, Paul McCartney not breaking a sweat, and the fog.

As we have the past two years, Juxtapoz is back at San Francisco's major music and art festival, Outside Lands, curating the visual art that you will see around Golden Gate Park from August 9-11, 2013. This year, we have added a few surprises to our line-up, as well as created a few new products at our tent...

This past weekend in San Francisco, March 2013 cover artist (and often Juxtapoz @ Outside Lands collaborator) Mike Shine opened a performance/installation/exhibition at White Walls Gallery, Flotsam's Harvest. With full musical and dance accompaniment, surrounded by a massive body of work that describes and alludes to the great riddle and poem of one Dr Flotsam, the show was fully appreciated with some of Flotsam's hell brew. Or Jameson. Not sure.

It’s 1970 and a Seven-year old boy happens upon a weird Russian clown at a carnival. Weird Clown grants Boy the life of his dreams. Boy signs the deal in blood. Weird Clown erases the bargain from Boy’s mind. But Weird Clown makes good on it; Boy unwittingly lives the dream life, as agreed. Fast forward forty years, we find that the boy is an artist who has become renowned for creating elaborate installations and performances about a mysterious Russian clown. The subconscious mind is a powerful thing, isn’t it? For the boy has subliminally recalled the carnival meeting, the bargain, even the clown’s correct name: Dr. Pyotr Mastolf Ilyas. Or “Flotsam,” for short.

On March 16th, 2013, Mike Shine (cover artist of the March 2013 issue) will open Flotsam's Harvest at White Walls in San Francisco. As we get closer to the opening this weekend, we have been showing you the hints and riddles that Shine has been dropping from Dr Flotsam, the mysterious character that has given Shine the gift of knowing and presenting the riddle of the Harvest. Today, we look at Act 5.
