Via our friends at Juxtapoz Latin America, Brooklyn based Matt Leines recently opened a solo exhibition, Hyperbolic, at Beginnings in Brooklyn. After living in Philadelphia for a few years, the artist moved to New York and settled into a rhythm that was both fresh and cheerful, or as the gallery notes: "Those who follow (Leines') work may have noticed a shift in the last few years, somebody flipped a switch in the artist’s brain–or maybe spun a dial–and all sorts of things began to happen: visible spectrum increasing, palette spinning out, subjects becoming more universal and less referential.

Matt Leines' works are archetypal and modern all at once. His totemic figures and strange geometries dwell in an imagined future both a- and all-chronological, a universe full of mystery and wonder. Leines has shown at the Deste Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece, the Galleri Loyal in Stockholm, Sweden, and Deitch Projects in New York. HeĀ is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and now lives and works in Brooklyn.

Cooper Cole in Toronto is hosting a great line-up in the group exhibition, Zagga Zow, now on display through August 20, 2012. Cooper Cole went into the deep trenches of the urban dictionary to find out what Zagga Zow means, and they came up with "A word with literally no definition." In the meantime, Matt Leines, Larissa Bates, Devin Troy Strother, Marc Bell, Charlie Roberts, John Riepenhoff, James Kirkpatrick, Anders Oinonen, and Sara Clendering are all showcased.

Matt Leines is an illustrator currently living and working in Philadelphia. Earning a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, Leines' work depicts the culture and conflicts of a fantasy world inhabited by mustachioed men, savage beasts, and living architecture, using lines and patterns that seem both intensely primitive and undeniably modern all at once.
