One thing you notice walking the streets of Johannesburg is everything is hand painted, with vinyl signs having little presence. Espo started another mural that is twice as big as the previous “Stay Up” mural and while they worked away, we walked around. Local artist Faith 47 happened to be putting up work around the corner from where were staying, so we briefly chatted with her.

Video: Classic footage of Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant http://www.juxtapoz.com/graffiti/video-classic-footage-of-martha-cooper-and-henry-chalfant http://www.juxtapoz.com/graffiti/video-classic-footage-of-martha-cooper-and-henry-chalfant Classic video footage recently emerged documenting photographers, Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, during the time they were documenting the subway graffiti scene in New York. The narrator and his slang explanations are worth a laugh. As the narrator states, “Putting spray paint on a subway car is illegal and masterpieces do not “light up the line” for long. They will be “buffed off” by the transit authority or “ragged” written over by other graffiti writers.”]]> Editor@juxtapoz.com (Juxtapoz) Graffiti Thu, 19 Jul 2012 09:59:34 -0700 Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston, NYC http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/retna-mural-on-bowery-a-houston-nyc http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/retna-mural-on-bowery-a-houston-nyc Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston, NYC
Martha Cooper went to check out former Juxtapoz cover artist, RETNA, and his progress finishing his mural on the world famous wall at Bowery and Houston in Manhattan. Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, JR, and Faile have all covered this wall, and Martha documents RETNA on her 12oz Prophet blog.

Rime just posted a small essay questioning the well-known term “old school”. With his own words he to attempts to make meaning of what is considered old school and asks the same question to a handful of writers coming from various generations. It appears that perspectives are affected by age, experience and location, but everyone definitely has an opinion.
