Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets features recent and new work by Marcel Dzama, including three videos inspired by the game of chess, as well as puppets and masks based on the characters, drawings, collages, dioramas, and sculptural works. Dzama has become known for his prolific drawings, which are characterized by their distinctive palette of muted browns, grays, greens, and reds. In recent years, the artist has expanded his practice to encompass three-dimensional work and film and has developed an immediately recognizable language that draws from a diverse range of references and artistic influences.

We were able to speak with Marcel Dzama about his episode of Artist Talk with Alia Shawkat and Lance Bangs, a new six-part MOCAtv series hosted by American actor, producer, and artist Alia Shawkat and directed by American filmmaker Lance Bangs. Marcel Dzama's brilliantly unique and witty watercolor illustrations have been a long time favorite of mine, and staple of inspiration in my own illustration practice. Marcel Dzama (born 1974 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) is a contemporary artist who lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited internationally, in particular his ink and watercolor drawings, which illustrate strange pale and slender characters with a sense of vintage nostalgia.

Winnipeg-based fine artist, Neil Farber, has a solo exhibition, Slugging, currently showing at Edward Thorp Gallery in NYC. We personally have been fans of Farber's work since he was a founding member of The Royal Art Lodge, an artist collective based in Winnipeg with Michael Dumontier and Marcel Dzama.

We finally got a chance to stop by Marcel Dzama and Michael Riedel's exhibitions at David Zwirner in New York City this past week. We had previewed Dzama's exhibition last month, and highly anticipated a great show, which is exactly what we found. And we were quite impressed with Riedel's elaborate text-based work.
