Lots of good shows opening this weekend (Travis Millard, Dave Kinsey, for example) but we are also looking to next weekend when one of our favorites, Augustine Kofie, opens a brand new body of work, Working the Angles, at Los Angeles' Known Gallery. The exhibition will features 30+ works including dense collage and assemblage on wood with yardstick framing, paintings on canvas, and hand painted multiples.

A delayed mural ordinance is creating confusion and frustration amongst artists, and building owners in Los Angeles. A recent wall painted by Zes, Push, Chris Brand, and Evan Skrederstu was painted over to serve as a backdrop for a production company, while another wall painted by Sand, Vyal, and Cope2 was buffed out by orders of the LAPD saying it was illegal to have a mural or graffiti piece on their property.

London-based INSA, who graced the subscriber cover of our September 2010 issue with his pink drips, was just in Los Angeles to work on the LA Freewalls project. If you so chose to find this building, it is the ARTSHARE building in Downtown Los Angeles. Thank you to Todd Mazer for the shots!

Barry McGee will make a return visit to show at Prism Gallery in Los Angeles tonight, May 11, 2012, with a large portion of work created at the gallery itself. In 2009, McGee held an exhibition for the gallery's inaugural exhibition, titled MindTheGap. Since then, the gallery has gone on to show many renowned international artists including David LaChapelle, Os Gemeos, Ryan McGinness, Andy Warhol, Araki, and a bunch more. This one should garner a ton of attention.

On our Monday morning cruise around, we got sucked into the oil painting world of Venice, California based Becca Mann. A mixture of Southern California, a bit of early California and Southwestern style shows up in her paintings, and a few nice ocean/surf scenes in her graphite works are all very well executed. A good start to the week.

Continuing on Donwood's theme set with his London Views series, Lost Angeles will be highlighted by a 18-foot apocalyptic panorama of the City of Angels being destroyed by fire, flood and meteor storm.

Few photographers create the cinematic scenery that Alex Prager depicts in her work. Part film noir, part Wizard of Oz circa 2025, Prager has taken an aesthetic and made it one of the most recognizable in the world of contemporary photography. That is hard to do in this day and age. Right now, her Compulsion series is on simultaneous display at three galleries: Michael Hoppen Gallery, London until May 26, at New York’s Yancey Richardson Gallery until May 19, and M+B Gallery, LA until May 12.
