Too often in our genre an artist is sprung into the spotlight too early, before they've been able to properly grow, develop their technique and actually experience being a gallery artist as a real job. We've been showing N.C. Winters at Gallery1988 for almost 7 years now, and there is no one we've shown who's been able to improve and benefit from that process more than him.

From the first time we saw the work of Devin Troy Strother at Richard Heller Gallery, we knew the Brooklyn-based artist was someone to follow and could see a bright future ahead. Years later and a few strong showings around the world (plus a Juxtapoz interview in January 2011) we are very excited to see his new works he has prepared for his show at Los Angeles' Richard Heller Gallery, opening September 8.

We have profiled Bill Dunlap's work in the magazine before, but we have just come across his black painting and faces series and wanted to share with our readers. Dunlap has shown in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Boston this summer in various group shows, but is also known to paint a very well-constructed barn mural. He also "Can't read, can't write." And was "Raised by wolves and skunks."

One of the most surprising titles we receieved last year that made its rounds around the Juxtapoz office was Nailed: The History of Nail Culture and Dzine. We had never seen nail art but into a fine art context, or documented so thoroughly as a sub-culture, and now Subliminal Projects in LA is showcasing an entire exhibition inspired by nail culture called, Nailed. The show features works by Gabriella Davi-Khorasanee, Dzine, Simone Lueck, Jamel Shabazz, and more.

So said MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch in his introduction to lead off our September 2010 cover story with LA-based Retna. Now the artist is set to open a body of new paintings and new works on paper at Michael Kohn Gallery in LA on September 15, 2012.
