Simon Wilson of the LA Weekly wrote an in-depth and insightful article focusing on Los Angeles’s current legal approach to graffiti and street artists.  The article begins with Sight, a 30-year old artist from South Central, who was sentenced to eight years and four months in state prison for his the graffiti activities in 2006, one of the harshest sentences officials can recall in Los Angeles.

THIS Los Angeles is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by San Francisco based artists Daniel Gibson and Mike Bertino. The show will run from Aug. 31st through Sept. 21st 2012, with an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 31st from 7:00 to 10:00pm. As the artists put it, "Gold Coast is a conversation between the two of us about our experiences growing up, and living on the West Coast as adults, and specifically in California."

The Works of Bill Dunlap

We have profiled Bill Dunlap's work in the magazine before, but we have just come across his black painting and faces series and wanted to share with our readers. Dunlap has shown in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Boston this summer in various group shows, but is also known to paint a very well-constructed barn mural. He also "Can't read, can't write." And was "Raised by wolves and skunks."

One of the most surprising titles we receieved last year that made its rounds around the Juxtapoz office was Nailed: The History of Nail Culture and Dzine. We had never seen nail art but into a fine art context, or documented so thoroughly as a sub-culture, and now Subliminal Projects in LA is showcasing an entire exhibition inspired by nail culture called, Nailed. The show features works by Gabriella Davi-Khorasanee, Dzine, Simone Lueck, Jamel Shabazz, and more.

In case you missed out last Thursday, Ubisoft in partnership with Rock the Vote held the launch of Art of the Assassin, a traveling pop-up art exhibit in celebration of the highly anticipated video game Assassin’s Creed III. Assassin’s Creed III, on track to be the biggest launch in Ubisoft’s history, is set to release on October 30. Stay tuned here for news on upcoming Art of the Assassin events.

Her works are characterized by their vibrant color palette, billowing locks of hair and a sustained interest in the interplay between abstract and figural elements.

The Works of Christine Wu

Christine Wu is a Los Angeles based artist, illustrator and designer. She was educated at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where she received her Bachelors in illustration. She has an almost cubist approach to her paintings, although completely representational, she presents multifaceted subjects with her ghastly, layered forms and an overlay of emotional regard.
