Among the many exciting things that happened in Los Angeles this past weekend, the Hammer opened its new exhibition featuring a retrospective of the works of Llyn Foulkes. The Hammer does a great job selecting high caliber artists that are not necessarily on everyone's radar, and this show is no exception to that statement. The exhibition features works from all stages of Foulkes' oeuvre.

These sunny urban California scenes are part of English Painter John Tierney's first UK solo show. Tierney has gained a steady following of collectors and admirers after retiring as a Criminologist and devoting his time to painting the urban landscapes of Los Angeles, New York, and Helsinki.

As you will soon see in our March 2013 issue, we have a great 12-page feature with Los Angeles-based Victor Castillo. We like to call this perfect timing; Saturday, February 2, Castillo will open Under Heavy Measures at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibition features 15 paintings on canvas, 10 paintings on paper, 20 graphite drawings on vellum, and an installation of fiberglass sculptures.

As we noted on the site yesterday, Curtis Kulig will be opening a pop-up shop in Los Angeles at Space 15 Twenty this weekend, February 1 and going through Feb 15. The "LOVE ME" Pop-Up and Polaroid Show is curated by Curtis Kulig and presented by Space 15 Twenty, Urban Outfitters and Vans. For the occasion, Juxtapoz has created a limited-editioned cover for the pop-up space featuring Kulig's "LOVE ME" staple. The cover was created specifically for the pop-up, and you can only get it at Space 15 Twenty.

One of our favorites here at Jutapoz, Sage Vaughn, is set to open a new show, Life, at the Scion AV Installation space in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 12. The show is described as a "body of work inspired by a word that describes almost anything; it covers so much, it means nothing." Tell that to Kanye. Tell that to Life Magazine. In fact, tell that to the cast of Facts of Life. Check a preview after the jump...

You know when you look at David Hockney's A Bigger Splash and you get that pure joy of flat color framed into a crisp and sharpened representational picture? While maybe not entirely similar in style, it seems that Rui Pedro Jorge has taken his own flattened approach to a different type of subject. Instead of the clean lines of mid-century Los Angeles, we see fragments of brightly colored wood, real palm trees (not the plastic, Southern California kind), and detritus of an area that does not thrive from the economic success that Beverly Hills might revel in.

In addition to the wonderful Stanley Kubrick exhibition on view at LACMA, there is yet another great reason to stop by this fine Los Angeles art institution during this holiday season: Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy (which will be up through February 10th, 2013).
