Juxtapoz // Thursday, October 02, 2014
Juxtapoz never shies away from a little controversy, and the November 2014 issue featuring the a cover story and the works South African-based photographer Roger Ballen. This cover, let's just get right to it: it's disturbing, haunting, intriguing, and yet part of a compelling body of work that Ballen has been building for decades. We are proud to have him on the cover and to tell his unique story.

Continuing our coverage from the fifth annual Living Walls Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, we catch up on a number of artist’s working on their murals, with some ambitious participants taking on a second wall. Over the last few days many of the artists have been working directly in the stifling sun with no shade, but each have found ways to combat the heat (Most successfully being Fintan Magee regularly running through playground sprinklers!).

On our first day in Atlanta for the Living Walls Conference we did what we always do, hit the streets to see what all the artists are working on. We started by riding a bike around to check everything out, but quickly abandoned the sweltering humidity combined with a whole lot of sweat and jumped at the opportunity to ride in a nice air-conditioned automobile to scope everything (Thanks Ben!).

As we reflect on the eventful week spent in Atlanta for the fourth edition of Living Walls, exhaustion kicks in. On our final two days we were able to see all the walls come to completion, which included the finishing of 3ttman, Nanook, Trek Mathews, and Roti’s walls. We attended a lecture series that took place on the 27th floor at the top of W Hotel that featured speakers and an artist panel all centered around urbanism and the use of public space. On the final day the main focus quickly shifted to getting the closing party ready that was to be held at the Goat Farm...

The sun now completely covered by grey clouds has given us some much desired cool down time on our third day here in Atlanta for the Living Walls Conference. After last nights block party in the Edgewood neighborhood where a large crowd congregated in front of Roti’s wall for a hazy late night of celebration in the streets, we wouldn’t be surprised if everyone had a more sluggish start than usual today.

On our second day in Atlanta for the Living Walls Conference, we walked out of our hotel straight into the beautiful Piedmont Park, which is as pristine and well-manicured a public park can get. From there we caught up with some more wall action, first checking out Agostino Lacurci’s vibrant painting of a character sitting in a chair accompanied by four masked dogs. Then we saw Jaz’s first mural painted for the conference: a stunning piece involving bulls around a fire in the woods, creating a serene but dark overall ambiance.

On our first day in Atlanta aka The ATL, Hotlanta or A-Town, we toured around to some of the walls checking out the muralists as they endure the summer heat and lay some paint down. First we got to view some walls by famed-photographer, JR that had been done the week prior before the conference kicked off. After that we caught up with 3ttman as he worked on a massive wall packed full of playful and vibrant colored imagery. Then we saw walls from Inti, Jaz, Know Hope and Roti in collaboration with Jaz. Our night ended at a” mansion party” and in true southern style, it had the largest porch we have had the opportunity to loiter on! Check back tomorrow for more updates!
