The prolific photographic work of Larry Sultan

Photography // Tuesday, April 08, 2014
Larry Sultan has greatly influenced the perception of photography. He has explored various topics in progressive approaches, which go beyond common techniques of aestheticizing an image into a ‘way of seeing’. His photographs have explored intensely personal ideas of American culture and marital relationships as well as sexuality at large. In his book “Pictures From Home” he photographed his own family to show the mythology of the suburban landscape.

Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel "Billboards"

Back in the 70’s and 80’s, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel were altering billboards with obscure images for the purpose of documenting their work with photos.  Often having no meaning at all, they were simply mocking advertising in general.  Their work is often overlooked when crediting pioneers of “street art”, while their efforts were long before there was a label.
