Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery is pleased to announce IN MEDIAS RES, the second solo exhibition of Brooklyn based artist José Parlá (and former Juxtapoz cover artist). The exhibition will feature new paintings, sculptures and a large-scale mural installation. IN MEDIAS RES is a chronicle of Parlá's life, beginning with his childhood and including his extensive travels around the world. Through choreographed, painterly works, the artist creates impressions of life-altering moments that have impacted his art making process.

Former Juxtapoz cover artist and continually pushing the boundaries of language and abstraction, José Parlá spent the summer working on a site-specific mural in Raleigh in conjunction with SNØHETTA and North Carolina State University at the James B. Hunt Library. Parlá's work was placed in a setting known for hard sciences, engineering, and robotics, and blended together quite harmoniously.

Last week in New York, JR and Jose Parla opened their collaborative exhibition “The Wrinkles of the City, Havana” at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. The two traveled and created murals in Cuba the previous year, and this exhibition showcased the work that was made.

JR and Jose Parla first collaborated last year in the streets of Havana, Cuba and now they have just completed a mural on the posh walls of Chelsea, Manhattan. The two will be showing together next week on May 7 in a show entitled “The Wrinkles of the City” at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York. This particular wall reminds us of similar collaboration esthetics such as when The Mac and Retna worked together.

December 2009 cover artist, José Parlá, is set to open a new exhibition at Yuka Tsuruno in Tokyo entitled PROSE. According to the gallery, " For Parla, walls are sites where the energy, history, and culture of urban society are located, and where human memory and psychology are inscribed." The show opens on March 21 and closes on May 18, 2013.

Born in Miami of Cuban parents artist José Parlá’s vibrant works explore the multi-layered histories of cities and urban environments; his paintings and site-specific installations are created both in his large carriage house studio and also works outside throughout city surfaces.

The two are currently decorating numerous walls in Havana, Cuba for JR’s ongoing project The Wrinkles of the City that has visited multiple cities over the last year. Incorporating Parla’s work has changed the overall look of the project, bringing a refreshing esthetic.
