Tomorrow Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be presenting NY Hardcore, recent works by Brooklyn-based artist Dan Witz in what will be his second solo exhibition at the gallery, accompanied by a printed catalog. With a career spanning over thirty years, Dan Witz is known for his tromp l’oeil street interventions and extensive studio practice. Applying old master painting techniques in the manner of Bosch or Brueghel to his works on canvas, the artist depicts hyper-realistic figurative imagery in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.

We have been exploring and researching a great deal of realism on the site over the past few years, noticing that the medium of hyperrealism, or photorealism as it gets labeled as well, is going through a very robust and interesting phase. Jonathan LeVine Gallery has curated a new exhibition, "Based on Actual Events," that brings together 4 artists we really enjoy, Alyssa Monks, Joel Rea, Diego Koi, and Eloy Morales, opening Saturday, January 11, 2014.

In preparation for his first solo exhibition in New York entitled “”Love Lock: Cycle of Violence,” Jesse Hazelip boldy acquired three tattoos on his eyebrows and the back of his forearms and head. Each of these tattoos corresponds with his exhibition that will explore themes of injustices within our legal system and underlying corruption in the prison industrial complex. For the opening reception, Hazelip will be occupying a replicated site-specific jail cell made of plexiglass that will be built to the size of a solitary confinement unit (six by nine feet).

This weekend we had the pleasure of attending the opening reception of AJ Fosik at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Against the Infinite, is the title of his impressive new series of works in this, his third solo show with the gallery. With only plywood and paint, Fosik creates totemic and three-dimensional pieces that seem like trying to get out of their reality to immediately enter another one. Their conflict lies right in between their physical and symbolic self... where they realize their mortality.

Once again, AJ Fosik's work just looks stunning and some of the most original fine art sculptures made today. Against the Infinite marks the third solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery for the Portland, Oregon based artist, and as the gallery notes, the new work explores themes of "mortality and invention with imagery such as skulls, exposed ribcages, tools and weaponry including sickles, swords, hammers and stakes."

Magic Mountain is a mixture of Wallacavage's now famed mixed media chandeliers and sculpture works, as well as the artist's first limited-edition multiple.
