Review: Jeremy Geddes "Exhale" @ Jonathan LeVine, NYC

Juxtapoz // Monday, October 22, 2012
We had the pleasure of attending the opening reception of Jeremy Geddes, at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. Exhale is the name of a series of 17 hyperreal paintings that capture surreal instants, created with incredibly accurate detail and laborious work. His characters seem to appear in the precise juncture of a fragmented moment and space “...generating a tension between man-made environments in flux and the fragility of living bodies.”

We often think Ashley Wood needs to get as much attention as any working artist today, but we know that there is a cult-following of Wood-heads all around the world. Features in our Pushead issue in November 2011, the Australia-based Wood is set to open a new body of work, Machine Sabbath, at Jonathan LeVine Gallery on Saturday, October 20. It will be his first solo show in the United States, and shares the same opening night as Jeremy Geddes' Exhale in the same gallery.

The Feburaruy 2012 cover artist will be showing on the same night as fellow Aussie and extreme talent, Ashley Wood.

With both Australian-based artists Jeremy Geddes and Ashley Wood debuting in the United States this weekend, October 20, at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC, we look back on the cover story we ran in February 2012 with Geddes. For the occasion, we asked Ashley Wood to interview Geddes, to discuss the artist's preparation for his US debut, as well as his penchant for detail and painting 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A coinciding show we have been looking forward to ever since we interviewed Australian artist Ashley Wood in our November 2011 issue: Wood and February 2012 cover artist, Jeremy Geddes, are set to open two solo shows at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC this Saturday, October 20. Geddes' Exhale and Wood's Machine Sabbath both have the Australian artists showing new works with a high anticipation throughout the art world.

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, August 01, 2012
A busy summer it has been all around in the art world, but in our home base of the San Francisco Bay Area, we have had two significant museum retrospectives that have made their way into the September 2012 issue of Juxtapoz. First off, we celebrate our cover story, Daniel Clowes, and his fantastic exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes. Over the years, the iconic comic book artist has given us cult-followed works such as Ghost World, Eightball, Wilson, and numerous covers for The New Yorker.

Juxtapoz // Thursday, January 05, 2012
We welcome the calendar year that is 2012 with the February 2012 issue of Juxtapoz, n133 on the record books. On the cover is Australian fine artist and painter, Jeremy Geddes, an artist that we feel needs no introduction from his brilliant work capturing both astronauts and everyday people in wonderful states of floatation in urban spaces. Geddes' friend, Ashley Wood (featured in November 2011), handles the interview.

The Art of Jeremy Geddes

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, October 19, 2011
After we wrote about Melbourne's Jeremy Geddes newest painitng on Facebook yesterday, we couldn't believe we hadn't shown a selection of his work on the site before. Profiled in the magazine, and soon to be featured, Geddes' work is a practice in the hyperreal / surreal, with incredible detail and photo-like realism.
