We are huge fans of Jean Jullien on this site, hopefully cooking something up with him in the print edition in the coming months. Now, he opens a solo show at HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles this Friday, March 27. In Poor Traits Jean Jullien has asked friends, artists, collaborators, and various facets of his network to submit their image to be redrawn by him with his authorial style. This is a personal assessment of his subjects’ pasts from their immediate mannerisms, filtered, and transcribed in Jullien’s distinctive hand.

We are huge fans of Parra, and his March 2008 cover ranks as one of our favorites of all time. And, we quite the 3 artworks that the Amsterdam-based artist sent for our 20th Anniversary show, "Art Truancy," at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC this past May/June. The artist is back at HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles with a new series of works, "Same Old Song," all visual treats that not only reflect the artist's sense of humor, but this roots in poster art where communication is a practice in simplyfying complex ideas.

In the summer of 1982, Janette Beckman was introduced to members of the East LA gang El Hoyo Maravilla. She proceeded to document this culture much as she had with British punks and the emerging New York hip-hop scene. HVW8 presents her photographs of these seemingly disparate tribes bound by a common rebel spirit.
