This past week, Juxtapoz took a trip to Hong Kong to both celebrate the inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong art fair, as well as spend time with the Converse team and their curated guest list of artists for their Wall to Wall Hong Kong project. Over the past few years, Converse has worked with artists from around the world to create over twenty Wall to Wall projects throughout Europe and North America. For Hong Kong, Converse brought artists from Berlin, China, Brazil, and France to complete the project. Today, we look at Melbourne-born, Berlin-based Buff Diss. 

Juxtapoz in Hong Kong: Takashi Murakami @ Galerie Perrotin

Another highlight from the Art Basel Hong Kong week was Takashi Murakami's new exhibition at Galerie Perrotin in central Hong Kong. In celebration of the gallery's 20-year relationship with Mr Murakami, this is the Japanese artist's 9th showing with Perrotin. This particular new body of work features Murakami's "famous alter-ego Mr. Dob and self-portraits of the artist surrounded by his emblematic characters including Kaikai and Kiki with epure backgrounds of skulls pattern."

There is a ton to see, lots of new galleries to read up on, maybe some similar artists, but mostly this is a crash course in over 50 Asian galleries that we didn't have first-hand experience with.

This week in China kicked off the first edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, the world's most famed art fair that has already taken over Basel, Switzerland in June each year and Miami in December. This particular edition focuses primarily on Asia and Asia-Pacific galleries, given us at Juxtapoz a chance to see new talent and new artists that we have yet to see in person. With a stunning backdrop, 79 floors above Hong Kong, we attended the special pop-up gallery show of Retna and Keith Haring tonight in Hong Kong during the Art Basel festivities. Featuring iconic Haring works mixed with new works by Los Angeles-based Retna, the works played in unison of a both an exploration of language and unique character construction.

Despite being ranked by The Economist as the world's most livable city, Hong Kong has a huge number of people who lived in very cramped conditions. To highlight this issue, the Society for Community Organization comissioned these birds eye view photographs of people's cubicle-sized apartments.  

New works with tea, liquor, and coffee by Carne Griffiths

Carne Griffiths works primarily with calligraphy ink, graphite and liquids, such as tea brandy, vodka and whisky when he draws and then manipulates the drawn line. After graduating from Maidstone college of art Carne served an apprenticeship and worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for 12 years, hence floral pattern, repetition and flow play a large part in his work.

Victo Ngai

Victo Ngai is a NY based illustrator from Hong Kong, graduated from Rhode Island School of Design. "Victo" is not a boy nor a typo, but a nickname derived from Victoria - a leftover from the British colonization. Some of her clients include The New Yorker, The New York Times, Leo Burnett, McDonald's, Adidas Hong Kong, Bank Simple, Tor Books and the International Herald Tribune.

Takashi Murakami "Flowers & Skulls" @ Gagosian Gallery, Hong Kong

This is one we wish we could head to Hong Kong for, Takashi Murakami's first show in Hong Kong at Gagosian Gallery. This exhibition explores one of the central dichotomies of his art—between joy and terror, his optimistic magnanimity as an artist and his pessimistic perspective on postwar Japan. It opens/opened tonight, November 29, in Hong Kong.

James Jean: OVM x Blitz @ Lane Crawford, Hong Kong
