Working with a team of 10 and using over 200 gallons of latex paint including spray paint, Atlanta-based artist, Hense, recently completed this 137 foot tall and 170 feet wide mural in Lima, Peru. More known for his bold illegal graffiti, in the past couple years the artist’s work has changed, moving in a nonrepresentational and abstract direction. Speaking on this particular mural Hense said “These works are inspired by the architecture and context of the structure. In this case I wanted to use very bright colors that would pop against the sky and next to other near by architecture in Lima.”

Bold, big and dripping in chrome. One of the exterior walls of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center now loudly displays the letters of local graffiti writer, Hense’s name backwards. Atlanta has had a number of issues regarding public murals and what’s deemed appropriate in the last year, so it’s nice to see a contemporary institution support the work of a graffiti writer.

If you didn’t know any better, finding the connection to this mural and the work of graffiti writer, Hense would be difficult. We really enjoy this newer abstract work he has been creating lately.

For years now, Hense has remained a key player in Atlanta’s graffiti scene producing quality work in and around the city. Here the artist branches out his traditional creative medium by painting a large abstract mural commissioned by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. It’s great to see city officials supporting and validating local artists in the South.
