"When Worlds Collide:" Chet & James Zar

Juxtapoz // Monday, April 13, 2009
Master of the macabre, Chet Zar, has a new and very unique show coming Saturday, may 16th, 2009 titled When Worlds Collide. Unique because, “it will feature new works by myself and my pops (James Zar),” Chet explains. “It should be a wild show since his visionary/fantasy works are pretty much the opposite of my gloom and doom stuff! Anyway, I am super excited about showing with my dad and the new pieces I am working on are definitely my strongest and most detailed paintings to date.” Looks like talent runs in the family. New Prints from Chet Zar

Juxtapoz // Monday, August 25, 2008
Macabre genius Chet Zar recently upgraded to a larger format printer, allowing him to finally create larger prints of some of his popular pieces, Black Magick (which you can see at In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor) and I Want You. Zar also included new pieces from a couple of his most recent shows, We Are The Shadows and Ugly American. These are the first prints issued from these shows. “I am really proud of these prints,” Zar told Juxtapoz. “They just look really sharp due to some new printing techniques I have picked up as well as a higher quality paper.” Grab your new Chet Zar print now at chetzar.com

Photos: Chet Zar's "Ugly American"

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Monster master Chet Zar's Ugly American opened at Strychnin Gallery's London location on Friday the 13th of June (how appropriate!) The show features 13 original, and especially eerie, paintings by Chet (the designer, special effects make-up artist and animator behind movies such as Hellboy, The Ring, The Fantastic Four, and others.) Chet says the inspiration for the Ugly American title came from a recent visit to Berlin where he "kept having to apologize to everyone about America" and explain, "We're not all that bad." Ugly American runs until mid-July, but his artwork will live on forever in the photos right here…

Chet Zar's "The Talking Board Show"

Juxtapoz // Monday, October 22, 2007
Photographer Mark Weston sent us a link to his shots from The Talking Board Show which opened October 20th at Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. Chet Zar curated this group show of more than 30 artists serving up their own version of the infamously spooky Ouija Board, aka The Mystifying Oracle. Bunch of really intricate and well-executed pieces in this show. www.markwestonphotography.com The show includes works by David Stoupakis, Carrie Ann Baade, Travis Louie, John Haley, Joe Vaux, a collab by Lola and Nathan Spoor, Chet Zar, Chris Peters, Ver Mar, Meats Meier, Colin Burns, Christopher Owens, Ed Benedetto, Kevin Willis, Eric Pigors, and more. More photos of the work are up on the gallery's website, www.copronason.com And, LAist did a pretty good photoblog that includes pictures of the many attendees who were seemingly testing their Hallowween costumes. www.laist.com
