Perhaps one of the greatest masters of illustrating deep dark subject matter with morbid undertones is Gustave Doré, a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor who passed in 1883. His depictions of "The Flood,", formed the frontispiece of Doré's illustrated bible. Doré, who also created famous images for the illustrated edition of Dante's Divine Comedy, frequently depicted his subjects under profound suffering. Very Apocalypse appropriate.
