What an interesting concept. Using photos to represent a film frame, placed together to represent movement, Simoes has created what he calls quasi-cinema. As the artist notes, "the aligned and woven photos give the sensation of movement. They are my own reference to the cinema, without being cinema, hence the name quasi-cinema."

Because this looks like something the Hubble Telescope found in the depths of another galaxy, we will surrender to the artist's explanation: Colours and patterns arising naturally from the interference of reflected light rays from the front and rear surface of a thin film of water and soap held in a tiny frame (a 'bubble wand').

One of our founders and contributors, CR Stecyk III, created this video, Luxuria, in conjunction with MOCA, featuring a montage of film and photographic images taken from the artist's archive dating back to 1965. In perfect, the video is abstract, minimal, and full of images that are defining moments for everything that came after.
