On May 8, 1920, one of the most iconic and influential graphic designers, Saul Bass, was born. Creating posters and opening film sequences for classics like Pyscho, North By Northwest, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, West Side Story, Cape Fear, Goodfellas, Casino, and countless more, we give a nod to the legend who passed away in 1996. We had heard this film was in production, but forgot about it until yesterday when we saw a new trailer for Michel Gondry's "Mood Indigo." Looks like the French filmmaker is back to creating the more whimisical, creative, and surreal fantasy worlds of some of his best films (Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep). Remember when we did a photoshoot with our Petit Gondry a few years back to coincide with our interview with Grand Gondry? That was fun. Now watch the trailer... 

We love a good opening sequence, so much so that we could have stopped watching The Darjeeling Limited after 3 minutes and that Kinks song. Opening credits are important, whether Woody Allen's simple text treatments or Hitchcock's more ominous, playful openers. "THE FILM before THE FILM is a short documentary that traces the evolution of title design through the history of film. This short film was a research project at the BTK (Berliner Technische Kunsthochschule) that takes a look at pioneers like Saul Bass, Maurice Binder and Kyle Cooper by showing the transitions from early film credits to the inclusion of digital techniques, a resurgence of old-school style, and filmmakers' love of typography in space."

Graphic artist and illustrator Sharm Murugiah scores multiple points with us with this project. He has taken the films/screenplays of Quentin Tarantino, and recreated their overall themes as Penguin style book covers, in a similar vein to Penguin's style of re-publishing the classics. All nine of Tarantino's major feature films are featured... 

... We want to take this opportunity to mention that we should cherish the art direction and creative promotion that this show has given the world over the past half decade. Even if you don't watch Mad Men, and could care less, there aren't many television shows that have ever paid attention to the details of marketing and stylzing itself to an audience. This is an art project. Look at these promo shots for Season 6, which begins on April 7, 2013 on AMC? Well. Done.

And yes this could be a Disney lineup circa 2004. And no, Disney would not approve. This is Harmony Korine's newest feature, Spring Breakers, and it puts the bugged out back in... bugged out. To celebrate Juxtapoz' special project in Detroit with Matthew Barney, Lance Mountain, Power House, and the Ride It Sculpture Park, Juxtapoz is excited to announce a limited edition Barney x Mountain (shot by our wonderful photographer, Joe Brook) cover circulating on newsstands across the world. There are only 1,000, so good luck on the search. We also invited filmmakers Eric Carlsen and Chris Rosik to shoot a documentary on Mountain's time in Detroit, which is what you get to see here, today.

The premise is perfect: Mr. Bingo, the London based illustrator and in our opinion, comic, will, for a small fee, send the recipient of your choice an abusive, illustrated message on the back of a vintage postcard. Culminated in a fantastic book, Hate Mail was recently published by Penguin books, and now Crane.tv has created a nice bvideo profile on the artist. Hate can be fun.
