Girls: Fact and Fiction

Erotica // Wednesday, May 15, 2013
The Minneapolis Light Grey Art Lab just opened a show called "Girls," featuring a series of illustrators' personal takes on their choice of real-life heroines or fictional women from pop culture and literature with a particular focus on the strength and sex appeal of female figures in our cultural rolodex. These illustrations are an awesome representation of how some of our most promising contemporary illustrators interpret the feminine badasses they grew up with. Some highlights include Barbie lounging in front of a sunset and Annie Oakley with her horse. What an awesome rebirth of girl power.

Sierra McKenzie by Dan Choi

Erotica // Wednesday, May 15, 2013
This stunning portrait of riveting redhead Sierra McKenzie is both pinup and portrait-- outrageously sexy in a softer, more specific way. You really get a sense of the personality McKenzie is revealing in this simple shot, a strong and discerning woman cast in the brushed shadows of the room. The timepiece necklace is a lovely touch, lending a vintage feel to the portrait.

Tara Babando Paints Hot Women

Erotica // Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Simply put, Tara Babando paints hot women. Based out of Montreal, Canada, Babando is a fashion designer by day and a painter by night. Her work consists of stunningly sensual portraits of gorgeous women, highlighting the strength and sexuality of the female form. Her attention to details and colors are fantastic, and we love seeing the traditional art side of this more editorially-directed style of painting women. Babando puts the artist's touch into erotica.

Marta Dell'Angelo's "Caryatids"

Erotica // Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Marta Dell'Angelo did a series of monumental oil paintings entitled "Caryatids," featuring the female body as rendered bare-breasted and cut off mid-face. These works capture a moment of relaxed intimacy and self-acceptance of the mind and body which expresses teh ability to resist the fatigue of living. The painting does not dwell on details but focuses more on shape and volume, presenting a slightly pixelated effect as a result of its origin as a digital photograph. Dell'Angelo's work investigates the direct relationship with one's body.

Olga Desmond in "Sword Dance"

Erotica // Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Olga Desmond performs the "Sword Dance" in these 1908 photos taken by Otto Skowranek. Like some great Medieval spirit rising from a lake, Desmond considers the viewer with otherworldly intensity, clad only in an ornate belt, a metal armband and a crown. Desmond embodies this antiquated sensuality, her curves complete and continuous as she poses with the upstanding swords. These photos are beautiful relics of a long-gone time, speaking to an era of fairytales, knights and kings. These photos are now displayed at the Staatliche Museum in Berlin.
