Cecily Brown's Crowds of Flesh

Erotica // Sunday, June 09, 2013
Cecily Brown's "Untitled" (2012), now on display in the Gagosian Gallery, examines the subject of the nude ensemble, drawing at the same time from history painting and pop culture. In fleshy yet chromatically sober color pairings, Brown creates clusters of diverse and invidiuated nudes that begin to crowd the painted scene as if from some unnamed purgatory. Fragmented figures and faces dissolve into kaleidoscopic concentrations of grey, purple and sienna. These paintings play out Brown's persistent fascination with the tension between bold painterly gesture and figurative content.

Alaina Varrone's Embroidered Erotica

Erotica // Saturday, June 08, 2013
Alaina Varrone is arguably the ballsiest embroidery artist out there. She embroiders striking scenes and images that are often explicit in nature, creating a wonderfully weird contrast between a traditionally inoffensive medium and its content. Born in New Haven, Connecticut "to a family of weirdos and storytellers," Varrone says she "uses this natural creativity to tell her own stories in thread." Varrone attended MICA as a fiber arts student and is currently working on a series based on the various gang girls of mythology.

Alberich Mathews' Floating World

Erotica // Wednesday, June 05, 2013
This absolutely gorgeous photo by Alberich Mathews seems more dream than photograph. A master of underwater photography, Mathews is able to capture a floating world untroubled by bubbles, debris or any other visual barriers, creating a haunting, almost marbled vision of a floating woman. The mirrored reflection casts a haunting double above her, as if a warped ghost of some space-birth.
