Ronnie Ray Mendez and the Hybrid Form

Erotica // Wednesday, July 10, 2013
Ronnie Ray Mendez is a visual artist indigenous to Southern California. A purveyor of Aestheticism, Romanticism and Symbolism, he fuses the human and animal form, illustrating the fine line we walk between reeason and raw emotion. OCD being a prerequisite for this Ronnie, he employs the complex and classical technique of stippling with cross-hatching, giving rise to a new renaissance reflecting natural cooperation. His symbols, settings and characters not only speak of his emotions, dreams and experiences but of cultural distortions and the human condition at large.

Hellen van Meene's "Untitled #366"

Erotica // Tuesday, July 09, 2013
This lovely portrait proves that erotica isn't all about perfectly-bronzed, blond-haired babes arching their backs in cutoffs on a Brazilian Beach. Hellen van Meene's "Untitled #366" (2010) captures the arresting sexiness of a wide-eyed girl who is far from--and happily so--this perky paradigm.

(Don't) Stop This Madness

Erotica // Tuesday, July 09, 2013
This raw, yellow-drenched video is ridiculously hot and definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK. Two gorgeous women in panties and wife beaters plus bottle of champagne? There's not much more to say, and odds are you're gonna find yourself speechless anyway. Produced by Said Energizer, "Stop This Madness" will have you asking for anything but that.

Aaron Robert Moore's Smudged Flesh

Erotica // Tuesday, July 09, 2013
Aaron Robert Moore's 2012 self-portrait visualizes a smudged, fractal version of himself. By manipulating his own image, Moore makes himself strange, wiping his face and limbs away in an act of gentle violence. This image brings to surface the undeniable vulnerability of our own flesh and the disembodiment that can sometimes occur when we decide to bare it.

Sierra by Alan Smithee

Erotica // Tuesday, July 09, 2013
This multi-exposure composite photo from Alan Smithee highlights his gorgeous, red-headed model with dizzying facility. By layering consecutive photos, Smithee allows the progression of her undressing to become explicit in the single image, lending a sense of time to the beautifully-developed film. This deftly-designed comoposition is more art than erotica, a lovely conception of a lovely subject.

More From Daniel Gonzalez

Erotica // Monday, July 08, 2013
We've previously featured young Colombian photographer Daniel Gonzalez on the Erotica blog, and we're pleased to do so once more. It's fascinating to watch a young artist's craft and career develop over the course of time, and at only 17 years old, Gonzalez continues to impress us with his clear creative vision and technical proficiency. He has already been featured on a number of blogs and published in books and magazines, and we will enthusiastically follow his trajectory as he progresses along a path toward artistic achievement and success.

Nir Arieli's Tension

Erotica // Monday, July 08, 2013
"I can't dance," asserts New York-based photographer Nir Arieli. "Whenever I am forced to try, I stumble or freeze or drink enough to disappear. However, this time, for the first time, I found myself actively involved in dancing - even if by using someone else's body." Working as a sort of visual choreographer, Arieli captures in static images the raw emotion and masculine elegance of male dancers, collaborating with them through verbal dialogue to create an entirely new language of movement. As Arieli explains, "my subjects provided me with physical intelligence. I only had vague mental images, a camera, and a long history of unused dancefloors."

The Look of Love

Erotica // Monday, July 08, 2013
Steve Coogan stars as the Hugh Hefner of England in "The Look of Love," his latest collaboration with director Michael Winterbottom. The film follows the life of British entrepreneur and adult publisher Paul Raymond as he challenges the country's obscenity laws by hosting nude circus revues, strip clubs, and racy stage shows, later rising to become the richest man in England but at the cost of losing those closest to him.

Good Morning, Egon

Erotica // Monday, July 08, 2013
Whether bright and bushy-tailed or still a little hazy from the 4th of July weekend festivities, join us this fine Monday morning as we ogle over some of the bizarrely lovely nude art of Egon Schiele. Despite such a stark palette and twisting, contorted movements, Schiele's erotic sketches nevertheless convey the inherent beauty of the female body in all its shapes and forms, his unique illustrative style lending a deliciously modern edge to these early twentieth-century pieces.
