Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets features recent and new work by Marcel Dzama, including three videos inspired by the game of chess, as well as puppets and masks based on the characters, drawings, collages, dioramas, and sculptural works. Dzama has become known for his prolific drawings, which are characterized by their distinctive palette of muted browns, grays, greens, and reds. In recent years, the artist has expanded his practice to encompass three-dimensional work and film and has developed an immediately recognizable language that draws from a diverse range of references and artistic influences.

We were able to speak with Marcel Dzama about his episode of Artist Talk with Alia Shawkat and Lance Bangs, a new six-part MOCAtv series hosted by American actor, producer, and artist Alia Shawkat and directed by American filmmaker Lance Bangs. Marcel's upcoming exhibition Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets opens April 6 at David Zwrner Gallery in London.

As we like to treat most major art fairs, we love just taking a quiet walkthrough all the different booths, halls, and exhibition spaces and just soak it all in. Of course, The Armory Show was the main event in NYC this past weekend, and with strong showings from Kaikai Kiki, V1, and then the entire Nordic Countries fair, here is our walkthrough recap of the entire fair.

We finally got a chance to stop by Marcel Dzama and Michael Riedel's exhibitions at David Zwirner in New York City this past week. We had previewed Dzama's exhibition last month, and highly anticipated a great show, which is exactly what we found. And we were quite impressed with Riedel's elaborate text-based work. The Winnipeg-born, Brooklyn-based, and prolific Marcel Dzama opens Behind Every Curtain at David Zwirner in New York City this Thursday (Feb 19). Dzama's drawings have garnered him praise for their attention to detail, but his evolution into video, sculpture, and other diorama art has made his shows must-see. More after the jump . . .
