Who didn’t love to hear a good old fairy tale to tuck them in at night? We have all seen and read wonderful renditions of the Brothers Grimm stories with beautiful princesses and evil stepmothers. However, this collaboration with the well-celebrated contemporary artist David Hockney, provides a different insight into the true tales of the Brothers Grimm. Originally published in 1970 by the British Royal Academy of Arts, Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm was reissued in 2012 featuring Hockney’s bizarre and brilliant drawings for the selected tales.

In the early 1980’s, English painter David Hockney began creating intricate photo collages that he called “joiners”. His earlier collages consisted of grid-like compositions made up of polaroid photographs. He then switched to photo lab processed 35mm photographs and created collages that took on a shape of their own, creating abstract representations of the scenes he had photographed.

The entire experience of having David Hockney open a massive exhibition, A Bigger Exhibition, if you will, in San Francisco is that you learn just how relentless and consistent the famed British artist's work ethic really is. He is non-stop, constantly learning new tricks, creating more immersive works, challenging pre-conceived notions of landspace and portrait painting, whether through iPad, or just old-fashioned perspective paintings. The Fall season is upon on us, and we are about to release our November 2013 issue with a very special story on a publishing house with a penchant for old-school pulp illustrations and print! Hard Case Crime is the cover story this month, a publisher of hardboiled crime fiction that emphasizes the use of an old style pulp art by hiring some of the best illustrators in the genre to do their covers. A Bigger Picture features fifty years of Hockney's fascination and investigation of landscape. Many of the works are inspired by the East Yorkshire countryside and created in the last five years specifically for this exhibition at the Royal Academy. Hockney has always been interested in re-examining how we see and make pictures through a variety of mediums, but most notably through photography, drawing, and painting.

Currently on exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark is Me Draw on IPad. The exhibition has several hundred of David Hockney's drawings that he has done with the Brushes application on his IPhone and more recently on his IPad.
