Documenting the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club between the years 1963 – 1967, photojournalist Danny Lyon immersed himself within the scene of biker culture. For four years Lyon travelled the landscapes of the United States of America, capturing scenes of races, long distance rides, meets and informal gatherings in raw black and white images.

Most people are introduced to Danny Lyon’s work through his most known series Bikeriders, which is our favorite, but that’s really just the surface of his extensive body of work. Over the past 5 decades this photographer has ventured on the road through a number of cultures, immersing himself in the lives of the subjects he photographed and Phaidon has published The Seventh Dog to serve as a monograph or retrospective photo book of this endeavor.

Last night, Levi's Vintage Clothing launched an exhibition called "The Biker with Oil and Leather & The Bikeriders" at the flashship store in downtown San Francisco. Featuring 21 painted motorcycle jackets from 13 international artists--many of whom are tattoo artists as well--and documents and photographs from Danny Lyon's "The Bikeriders," the show pays homage to the American biker legacy. We've got info (and pictures!) after the jump.
