One of Cindy Sherman's earliest silent films on Super-8. Created in 1975, Doll Clothes takes the imagery of Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase as a starting point which encourages Sherman's humorous interest in gender and identity - a hallmark of her narrative practice which continues into the present.

A busy summer it has been all around in the art world, but in our home base of the San Francisco Bay Area, we have had two significant museum retrospectives that have made their way into the September 2012 issue of Juxtapoz. First off, we celebrate our cover story, Daniel Clowes, and his fantastic exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes. Over the years, the iconic comic book artist has given us cult-followed works such as Ghost World, Eightball, Wilson, and numerous covers for The New Yorker.

They are questions that I don’t like to answer, or even think about, ones I mulled over and over when I visited Cindy Sherman’s retrospective at MoMA this past Spring and again when the exhibition was moved to SFMOMA this Summer (opening on Saturday, July 14). Who is Cindy Sherman? Who is the real Cindy Sherman? I don’t like that it even comes up in my head. What she is, on the surface, is a photographer, model, stylist, filmmaker, and wardrobe artist....

This photo is rad. That’s really the first thought that entered our collective minds upon laying eyes upon this delicious piece of eye candy. It’s part of the Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now exhibit, which will be on display at the International Center of Photography in New York City, from January 16th through May 3rd, 2009. Curated by Carol Squiers and Vince Aletti, Weird Beauty showcases fashion images from over 40 international photographers, including Steven Meisel, Cindy Sherman, Mario Sorrenti, Nick Knight, Steven Klein, Miles Aldridge and Paolo Roversi, who draw upon a range of influences, including art, sexuality, youth culture, and more.
