Coincidentally born on the same date, Christo and Jeanne Claude were prolific environmental artists whose projects took extensive time to complete and were always very large in scale. Often using fabric and rope to create their work, the two re-visualized the landscape making for a new esthetic impact. One of their last major works was the “The Gates” in New York City’s Central Park, which consisted of 7,503 vinyl "gates" along 23 miles. The two insisted that the purpose of their art was simply to bring joy and beauty and create new ways at looking at familiar landscapes.
