Opening: "(Almost) Free Formed": Chris Johanson, Barry McGee, and Laurie Reid @ City College, SF

Juxtapoz // Friday, February 22, 2013
Last night, we attended the opening of a special exhibition at City College in San Francisco, (Almost) Free Formed, featuring collaborative works of former City College students Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, and Laurie Reid. The quiet, intimate night was highlighted by the trio's organization and layout of the show, and also gave notice to the importance of SF's City College to some of the most successful and influential artists to come out of San Francisco in recent decades.

Two of our favorite artists and veterans of the print magazine, LA-based Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson, just finished installing a new commission of custom furnishings on the Lindbrook Terrace at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. The couple created chairs, tables, ottomans, and sofas incorporating used furniture, found wood, and colorful fabrics.

Back Talk: A Conversation with Chris Johanson

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, July 25, 2012
Chris Johanson remains one of our favorite enigmas in all of contemporary art, and we like to keep it that way. He will be opening a new exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery in New York City on September 14, 2012, and because that seems enough of an occasion to send one of our favorite artists a list of questions, we did just that.

Now he is having a gallery style fire sale.  Photos and more after the jump…

One of our favorite exhibitions that the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art holds is the SECA (Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art) Awards, focusing and honoring Bay Area artists whose innovative works, while diverse in form and subject matter, reflect overlapping affinities. This year, SECA is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Bay Area art scene with both the 2010 SECA Awards exhibition and Fifty Years of Bay Area Art retrospective.
